The Affection of Truth (12/04/22)

This week (for the 1st Sunday of Advent) reflecting on the story of Mary and Elizabeth we made reference to the need for developing an "affection of truth" in our minds and hearts if we are each to find and follow the Lord in our lives.

Below we share a 1975 New Church Life article on the same theme in the hopes that it will inspire for you "a love of learning from the Divine Word in order that we may make [this] truth active in our lives here on earth."

I cannot think of a better preparation for the Lord's own birth!

THE AFFECTION OF TRUTH (AT CHRISTMAS)

The affection of truth is essential because without it we do not seek an authority outside of ourselves; without it we do not seek to establish a true conscience; without it we have no beginning for a new life.

Thus at Christmas time we will recall to our minds the beautiful story of the Lord's birth and will remember the humble and willing part that a young Jewish woman played. In doing so our hearts will be full of gratitude for the vision we have been given of the Lord Himself, and for the redemption from the power of hell which He brought about.

At the same time we will not forget that it is necessary that the Lord make the same coming into each one of [our minds and hearts]; He came to the whole of humankind, but He reaches out always to come again individually into the lives of every person. [That] can only [happen] if we nurture in our own minds the love of truth, a love of learning from the Divine Word in order that we may make His truth active in our lives here on earth-in our relations with our neighbors and in our obedience to the Commandments.

The Lord came into the world for no other purpose than that these things should be affected in the hearts of [all of us].

[As Simeon said:] “Mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel." (Luke 2: 30-32)

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR SUNDAY (12/04/22)

Path to Bethlehem Tableaux:

Our Path to Bethlehem Tableaux is happening TOMORROW, Saturday December 3rd STARTING AT 6PM in the Chapel. We were treated today to a wonderful run through of the script, parts, chancel setup, and review of costumes in preparation for the event. It was beautiful! You won't want to miss this! Join us!

Christmas Eve Service 5pm:

As last year, we will be having a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service and Carol Sing in the Chapel on Christmas Eve at 5pm. Come one, come all!

Poinsettia Drive:

Would you like to dedicate a poinsettia to be on the chancel in memory of a loved one? It is a lovely opportunity to have beloved people represented there for the Christmas season. All you have to do is pay Kris Bernardy or Louise Rose ($20 for a large flower or $10 for small) and be sure to give the name of who it is dedicated to. The names will be printed in the bulletin during the Christmas season. The flowers can be taken home on Christmas eve or later. Christmas is coming! Louise Rose

Once again this year we will feature donations of Poinsettias for the chancel to honor our loved ones. This year's offering will kick off Darleen Raulerson reading a story of the history of the Poinsettia's appearance at Christmastime (THIS SUNDAY), along with a craft of the same offered by Susan Cooper.

Clothing Drive For Those In Need:

This is the final Sunday we are asking for donations of blankets and jackets to those in need. Simply bring them to church this Sunday (Dec. 4th) and Judith Keane and Susan Cooper will manage getting them distributed to "the Lot" organization devoted to supporting this effort. Thank you!

Angel Tree Ministry:

Our thanks to those who have taken an ornament and donated to support a local family in need from our Angel Tree in Friendship Hall. We are asking for wrapped presents (with the ornament taped to the top) to be brought back to the church for donation by December 11th.

SRC Semi-Annual Meeting

This will serve as notice of the Sunrise Chapel Semi Annual Meeting. Please join us at 12:45 on December 11th for the Semi-Annual meeting of the Sunrise Chapel congregation. Hear a review of the previous year and exciting plans for our future. Come lend your voice to this important effort!
