Sunday Worship Service October 16 @ 11 AM
"Don't Feed the Wild Animals" - Nathan Gladish
In the musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" Snoopy sings a song with these lyrics: "I feel every now and then that I gotta bite someone! I know every now and then what I wanna be: A fierce jungle animal, crouched on the limb of a tree!"
I think Snoopy speaks for everyone now and then. Sometimes against my better nature, I allow myself to act ferocious even to those I love and respect, making biting comments that are anything but compassionate.
This Sunday, let's explore how to avoid acting like a wild animal - spiritually.
In preparation, read the quotations from the Bible and Swedenborg's works below.

By the way, this is the same topic that the Spiritual Growth Group is working on from this past Wednesday. Extending it to Sunday is an effort to get more people involved in the value of this kind of practical spiritual work.

With love and respect,
Nathan

Volunteers Needed this Sunday after Church
We need to move EVERYTHING out of the chapel
"Many hands make light work!"
In preparation for the carpet removal on Monday, I welcome any able-bodied volunteer movers to remove all the plants, chairs, and other furniture out of the Chapel, the Vestry, and the Bride's Room after our church service (or after lunch - whichever works better for you) this Sunday.
Once the carpet is installed, we will also need help moving everything back in place - next Friday or Saturday.
Thanks for considering helping with this!
If you are able and willing to help, talk with me about timing.
~Nathan

New Carpet Installation
NEXT WEEK IS THE BIG INSTALL WEEK!
The team working with the generous financial grant from the Asplundh Foundation is pleased to report that the new carpet will be installed in the sanctuary, the vestry meeting room, and the bride's room the week of October 17th!!

In addition, a new hearing aid system will be installed in the chapel so that anyone with hearing aids can easily pick up audio through this special system. This system is being donated to Sunrise Chapel as a generous gift of Cheri Reynolds in honor of her husband George. It is being coordinated with the installation of the new carpet, since the "audio loop/wire" needs to be underneath the carpet.

Repair and painting of the chapel interior walls is continuing. After this, the next big change will be updating the foyer flooring, and updating the ceilings and lighting in both the foyer and the vestry.

New Church Foundations Class
Mondays at 6:30 in the Children's Chapel
This 7-week series of classes / small groups highlights the main teachings of our church, and helps give insight into what the New Church movement and the global organization is all about.

This session is now closed to new participants. However, if you took the course before, you are free to join us, or if you want to "make up" a couple of meetings you missed in a previous series, you are welcome to drop in.

If you can't attend this series or you prefer a daytime meeting, let me know, and we will coordinate something to suit your needs.

Readings for this Sunday's Service

Readings from the Bible and the Teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg about Wild Animals

Leviticus 26:3, 6, 15, 22
God said to the Israelites,"If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them, I will banish the evil wild animals from the land. But if you despise My statutes, I will send into you the wild animals of the field, which will lay you waste."

Ezekiel 34: 25-27
Speaking of those who are spiritual, the Lord prophesied in Ezekiel, "I will make with them a covenant of peace and I will banish the evil wild animal from the land, and they will dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods, and I will give them and the places around My hill a blessing."

Secrets of Heaven 45, 46
In the Lord's Word, animals are of two kinds: bad (because they are dangerous) and good (because they are tame or harmless). Bad animals symbolize evil things in us. Good animals symbolize the good, gentle things in us, such as feelings of affection.
The traits in us that belong to a lower order and rise more out of our body are called the wild animals of the earth; they are cravings and appetites.
Many examples from the Word can clarify the fact that beasts or animals symbolize the feelings we have — negative feelings if we are evil, positive feelings if we are good. For example, take this verse in David:
"I was dull-witted; I was like the animals in God’s sight." (Psalms 73:22)

True Christianity 331
Evil and good cannot coexist; the more evil is removed, the more good is focused on and felt. This is the case because all who are in the spiritual world have a field of their particular love emanating around them. This field spreads all around and has an effect on others. It creates feelings of harmony or antipathy.
The fact that evil has to be removed before goodness is recognized, perceived, and loved could be compared with many situations that are possible in our world; for example, the following: Suppose someone keeps a leopard and a panther in an apartment and, as the one who feeds them, is able to live safely with them. No one else can visit unless their owner first removes these wild animals.

"Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
