A five-week series on being better communicators
This Sunday, we'll focus on LISTENING in relation to the parable of the Sower. I like to call this the parable of four types of ground. It's so important to "be soft ground" - open, accepting, nurturing - whenever we are listening.

LOTS OF OTHER THINGS GOING ON:

Lobby Renovations and more...
This past week the new floor tile in the lobbies of the Chapel and Friendship Hall was installed. If you remember "Tony the Tiger", picture him saying it looks G-R-E-A-T!! Our entrances are looking more and more inviting! Next up is painting the (newly textured) ceilings in the Chapel lobby and "vestry" so that new lighting fixtures can be installed.

"WOW" - "Inspiring" - "Stunning"
These are words people used to describe the photographic slide show - "Awakenings" - presented last night by a local photographer, Nelson Rodriguez. His introduction about his life and the influence of photography on him was touching, educational, and motivational. 20 people were wowed by this unique contribution. A really great event, and a wonderful way to launch our new Journey program. Thank you, thank you Nelson Rodriguez for sharing your story, your passion, and your photography with us!

Mindful Communication Challenge
Join A New "Journey of Spiritual Growth" Group

This five-week program inspires us to pay attention to our thoughts and feelings, and the way we express those thoughts and feelings to others. Since true connection has a heavenly quality, we will explore symbolism from various Biblical parables that start with the words, “The kingdom of heaven is like . . ."

Each chapter of the workbook includes a communication task drawn from a parable, as well as daily readings, quotes and reflections.

This will be a great chance to support each other on a journey of true self-expression, as we nourish connections with those we love. Join us as we practice speaking in ways that are kind, true and useful!

Starting Sunday, January 29
    Week 1: Am I listening?
    Week 2: Is it true?
    Week 3: Is it kind?
    Week 4: Is it useful?
    Week 5: Am I willing?

A Word about the Chapel Sound System
Image
Thank you for your patience as we work on improvements
Last Sunday was the first time in over 5 years that we lost the use of our sound system at the last minute before the service started. We didn't have time to troubleshoot, so we did the best we could with only a small stage monitor for amplifying the guitar.

During this week I have been working with two local sound engineers to troubleshoot and get the system back up and running. We think we have identified the problem, and I'm confident the system will be back in operation this Saturday and Sunday. In the process, quite a few adjustments, including a few equipment upgrades, have been made in the sound booth. Thank you for your patience. It's a work in progress.

Readings for Reflection

The Parable of Four Types of Ground
Luke 8:2-8
Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases.
While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”
When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

The Spiritual Meaning of the Parable
Spiritual Experiences (minor) 4637
When holiness and goodness falls down from the Lord through angels into us and our enjoyments of life, then it is almost like a hidden seed falling into the ground. If the enjoyment is pride, or the love of self, then it falls into bad ground, containing thorns [Matt. 13:7, Mark 4:7, Luke 8:7]...
But if goodness and holiness from the Lord falls into the enjoyment of caring for others, into the affection for justice and righteousness, then it falls into good ground, and bears much seed. The affection itself is the ground, the quality of which is sensed from no other source than the person's enjoyment. The best ground is there if there is the affection of caring for others, and in fact, if there is the caring of faith in the Lord.

Angelic Communication
Secrets of Heaven 1759
Angels have a sweet kind of language that flows along like the gentlest of breezes, caressing the listening ear and softening the actual words. It is also swift and sure.
The reason for the fluidity and charm of their speech is that the heavenly goodness present in their thoughts has the same qualities, and that there is no discrepancy between their words and their thoughts. All sweetsounding harmony in the other life comes from goodness and charity.

“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
