Why Love the Bible?
The Bible is a confusing and sometimes challenging book
Even so, it is one of the most published and sold books in history. And for many it is the most important book in the world. With the Tucson Festival of Books next weekend, I thought it would be useful to highlight why people love this unique and significant book.

Holy Supper during Sunday's service
This Sunday will include our every-other-month offering of Holy Supper. It is an open communion - everyone is welcome to participate. Thank you to Sue and Wes and Matthew B. for helping set up and clean up for this special feature of our services. They have been doing it for many years. And this Sunday, Sue will be training a new volunteer, Carol K., who has graciously accepted the invitation to help.

LOTS OF OTHER THINGS GOING ON:

This year's Journey of Spiritual Growth has concluded
Thank you! to everyone for participating in the 5-week "Mindful Communication Challenge" program. We started Sunday, January 29 and finished up this past week. It was a content-rich text, and I had fun researching and presenting the topics in the Sunday services! I have heard great reports about the groups, so I am satisfied that this has been a very useful and helpful program. In fact, the Women's Group liked it so much they are going to do it again! YAY!

Plans for the Tucson Festival of Books - March 11 & 12 > See below
We will have booth #126 this year on March 11 & 12. It is towards the west end of the U of A Mall, and it is on the south side of the mall road. This means the interior of the booth won't be overwhelmingly sunny, which is nice. See below for more information.

Fundraiser for our keyboardist's, Katrina's, missions trip to Haiti  > See below
TONIGHT ONLY at the Chick-fil-A on Tanque Verde Rd at Grant Rd. (where Grant and Kolb intersect).

Thank you to Sammie for designing our new logo and posters which will be displayed in the booth!!

This year, organizers of the Festival anticipate an attendance of 130,000 people. The feature of our booth will once again be "The Joy of Spiritual Growth" and the Spiritual Growth Groups.
If you are interested in and willing to volunteer in the booth, speak to me, Frank Rose, or Kelly W.
We need friendly people to share their testimonials about the value of being involved in the spiritual growth groups. And we have some orientation suggestions to help you feel prepared and ready to enjoy the experience.

Tonight only > Fundraiser for Katrina - March 3 @ 5-8 pm

Our keyboardist, Katrina, is planning to go on a mission trip with her school this summer. The school is having a fundraiser at the Tanque Verde Chick-fil-A tonight > March 3, from 5-8 pm. 15% of your purchase will be donated to the cause.

Katrina says, "This mission trip is going to be led by a friend of mine, who also attends Desert Christian High School, through an organization called "Mission of Hope". They have a branch in Haiti that we will be going to.  We will do various work projects and be able to spread the gospel.  There are ten students and three chaperones that are going to be on this trip which is eight days long.  If you cannot attend the Chick-fil-A fundraiser please just keep me and my friends in your prayers for safety, effectiveness of sharing the gospel, and for the funding of this trip.  Thank you for everything!"

Phoenix New Church Women's Retreat - March 3-5
Image
The women of the Phoenix New Church are excited to announce their second annual women's retreat to be held on the weekend of March 3-5 at a beautiful, private home in northern Phoenix, generously provided just for this event. The spa pool, gas fire pit and lovely views on the edge of a golf course are part of the rejuvenating experience.

The theme will be the Butterfly Effect (acts of kindness paid forward). The retreat coordinator is Laurel Walsh of Phoenix.  The cost is very minimal, covering food and craft supplies only.  This was a huge success last year, and will be again because of all of the wonderful ladies who attend.

Readings for Reflection for this Sunday, March 5

The Word from the Beginning
John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Nature of the Bible - the Word
True Christianity 191-192 - Swedenborg
The nature of the Word’s style is that it has holiness in every meaning and every word; in fact, in some passages there is holiness in the very letters. As a result, the Word connects us to the Lord and opens heaven.

It is very important to realize, however, that the only people who receive life from the Word are those who read it for two purposes: to draw divine truths from it because it is the fountain of truth; and to apply to their life the divine truths they have drawn.

Any of us who are unaware that the Word has a spiritual meaning, like a soul within its body, have nothing else to judge the Word by except its literal meaning. Yet the literal meaning is like a case that contains the precious objects of the spiritual meaning. When we are unaware of the spiritual meaning, we cannot judge the divine holiness of the Word any more than we could judge a precious stone on the basis of the ore that envelops it, which sometimes looks very ordinary. Or imagine a case made out of jasper, lapis lazuli, amianthus (also called mica), or agate that contains rows of diamonds, rubies, sardonyxes, oriental topazes, and so on. If we do not realize it contains gems, it is no wonder we do not value the case any more than the worth of the material it is visibly made of. It is the same with the Word’s literal meaning.

Therefore to prevent people from doubting that the Word is divine and most holy, the Lord has revealed to me its inner meaning, a meaning that is essentially spiritual and exists within its outer, earthly meaning like a soul in a body. The inner meaning is the spirit that brings the letter to life. The inner meaning has the power to prove even to our earthly self that the Word is divine and holy—provided we are willing to be convinced.

“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
