Not your average fishing trip Last Sunday I was very pleased to talk about Mary Magdalene's experience of seeing the Lord for the first time after His resurrection. I mentioned a great book that I used in my research, and if you are interested in
borrowing it, I have a copy - "Searching for Mary Magdalene" by Sonia Werner. (You can also purchase it online.)
This Sunday, I'll talk about another of my favorite post-resurrection stories, about seven of the disciples getting an unprecedented visit from the Lord in their normal, familiar setting -
fishing! Jesus uses every interaction as an opportunity to teach, and this story is rich with meaning.
Worship Team Update
I am very pleased to say that the first two meetings of my renewed Worship Team have been great! Excellent, stimulating discussion and Bible study about the upcoming Sunday message. I learn so much from hearing people's questions and personal insights. This past Wednesday, one of the participants shared his knowledge of boating and fishing, and it really helped us picture the physical and psychological challenge the Lord gave the disciples in this
story.
If digging into an upcoming message with others mid-week interests you, join us!

Who Is Emanuel Swedenborg?
|
|
An intro to Emanuel Swedenborg and his work Monday, May 15 from 6:30-8:00 pm At Sunrise
Chapel Free and open to the public I was approached by someone from another local Chapel not affiliated with our church who is interested in learning more about Swedenborg and his influence. We agreed that Sunrise Chapel would host this introductory event and welcome the
public.
The program will include a short video, several presentations by different people, time for meditation and we'll conclude with an opportunity for people to share closing thoughts.
I encourage everyone to attend, even if you are an expert in Swedenborg. When we invite the
public to an introductory event like this, it helps to have people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I think you will find this an interesting combination of presentations and testimonials.

You Are Invited to Participate in Worship Team meetings - Revised and Re-energized
|
|
Our first two meetings were wonderful - insightful, enjoyable, and social What is this Worship Team? I used to call it my Sermon Team, but I'm expanding it to include other aspects
of planning worship services. The purpose is to discuss upcoming worship services—topics, application to life, audio and visual aids, music, ways to include more participation, etc. I welcome anyone to try it out with no term commitment. It will be a collaborative small group experience, and what we do will depend somewhat on the interests of the group. My vision for it is a forward-looking, creative brainstorming and study group. I have found lots of inspiration
from such team efforts in the past. I will run it as a small group, starting with a brief "check in" and prayer, and finishing with a quick "closing thought."
You don’t need to be well-versed in the Bible or theology. Often what I find most helpful are people’s questions and reflections on a topic in relation to their lives. We will also be reading together "The Art of
Effective Preaching - A Guide for Those Who Preach and Those Who Listen," by Frank and Jeremy Rose.
Meetings are Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 am in the pastor's office. Let me know if you have questions and if you’d like to come!
Bring your favorite Bible if you have one. ~Nathan

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish John 21:1-14 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go
with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter,
“It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and
dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
The Internal Sense of the Miraculous Catch of Fish Revelation Explained 513 - Swedenborg The reason why the Lord showed Himself to His disciples while they were fishing is because "to fish" signifies to teach what is true and good and so to reform. He commanded them to cast the net on the right side of the boat because that signifies that all things should be
done from the good of love and of charity. "The right side" signifies the good from which all things should come. When truths come from goodness, they live and are multiplied. The fact that they had fished all night without catching anything signifies that nothing comes from one's own power alone, but everything is from the Lord.
Secrets of Heaven 10061 This
[miraculous catch] represents the reality that when good is the side on which people act or teach, they net countless items of truth; but not the reverse.
