Mothers Day + other news and events

Published: Fri, 05/12/17

Mothering encompasses a wide spectrum of people and activities
The woman in this photo may actually be the kid's favorite aunt who could never have children, but who loves to do exciting things with her nephew. Or the woman who married a man who already had children and chose to help him raise his. Or the woman who simply loves to mentor children in her job as a school counselor. That's nurturing, and in the broad spectrum of mothering, it is worth celebrating! We each have a mother, and more than that, we all get nurtured by a variety of people throughout our lives. This Sunday, we'll acknowledge and celebrate the kind of nurturing that everyone needs and that a variety of people can provide in their own ways.

Mothering is an active verb, that shows the active heart of the Lord.

Sunrise Chapel has a library and books for sale. The book center is the room between Friendship Hall and the Children’s Chapel. The books we sell are all related to New Church thought. Some are the works of Emanuel Swedenborg, and others are written by  authors who have an interest in the theology.
Come see what we have!
This year we are hoping to get more books into more readers' hands, so we are having a Book Fair. All the books for sale are greatly reduced in price. We have free books as well. Take a look, and pick up some good reads for yourself and your friends!

Who Is Emanuel Swedenborg?

An intro to Emanuel Swedenborg and his work

Monday, May 15 from 6:30-8:00 pm
At Sunrise Chapel
Free and open to the public
I was approached by someone from another local Chapel not affiliated with our church who is interested in learning more about Swedenborg and his influence. We agreed that Sunrise Chapel would host this introductory event and welcome the public.

The program will include a short video, several presentations by different people, time for meditation, and we'll conclude with an opportunity for people to share closing thoughts.

I encourage everyone to attend, even if you are an expert in Swedenborg. When we invite the public to an introductory event like this, it helps to have people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I think you will find this an interesting combination of presentations and testimonials.

News from Worship Team Meetings

Wednesday at 9:30-10:30 am

Last Wednesday we had a rousing discussion about nurturing in preparation for Mothers Day. It's such a treat to dial into what people think about a topic and then continue my study and preparation for the Sunday message. Thank you to those who showed up and shared from your heads and hearts.

What is this Worship (Planning) Team? I used to call it my Sermon Team, but it's more than that. We also talk about other aspects of planning worship services such as audio and visual aids, music, ways to include more participation, etc. I welcome anyone to try it out with no term commitment.

It is a collaborative small group experience. It is a forward-looking, creative brainstorming, and study group. I have found lots of inspiration from such team efforts in the past. I run it as a small group, starting with a brief "check in" and prayer, and finishing with a quick "closing thought."

Don't know the Bible? - no problem! In fact, it helps me to know what non-students of the Bible think of the stories. Often what I find most helpful are people’s questions and reflections on a topic as it relates to their lives.

We are also studying "The Art of Effective Preaching - A Guide for Those Who Preach and Those Who Listen," by Frank and Jeremy Rose. As the title implies, it's worthwhile to learn about preaching even if your main activity during a sermon is listening.

Meetings are Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 am in the pastor's office.
Let me know if you have questions and if you’d like to come!

Readings for this Sunday

David's Praise to the Lord for Being Nurtured
Psalms 71:1-8 , 14
In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
    let me never be put to shame.
In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
    turn your ear to me and save me.
Be my rock of refuge,
    to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
    for you are my rock and my fortress.
Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
    from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.
For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence since my youth.
From birth I have relied on you;
    you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.
    I will ever praise you.
I have become a sign to many;
    you are my strong refuge.
My mouth is filled with your praise,
    declaring your splendor all day long.
As for me, I will always have hope;
    I will praise you more and more.

The Fourth Commandment
True Christianity 305 - Swedenborg
Honor Your Father and Your Mother So That Your Days Will Be Prolonged and It Will Be Well with You on Earth
This commandment reads this way in Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16. Honoring your father and your mother in the earthly meaning, which is the literal meaning, includes honoring our parents, obeying them, being devoted to them, and thanking them for the benefits they have given us - for feeding and clothing us, introducing us into the world so that we may become civil and moral people within it, and introducing us into heaven through religious instruction. In this way our parents have cared for our prosperity in time and our happiness to eternity. They do all these things from a love they have from the Lord, whose role they have played. In a comparable sense, it also means that children whose parents have died are to honor their guardians.
