How free are we? Sometimes we talk about being stuck or trapped or oppressed. We might feel under someone else's control or just out of control emotionally. At times, there are things which we have no control over and that we feel powerless to change. And yet, the Lord always keeps us spiritually free. Free to
be ourselves at an inward, core level. This has its challenges, though, because just as we are free to be good, noble, and useful, we are also free to will and intend things that are evil, ignoble, and useless.
As we celebrate our nation's freedoms, which are very important to uphold, let's also raise the bar and celebrate the source of freedom that is much more universal and which is available for all people of all nations. Let's consider how we can
experience the joy of heavenly freedom!

Hope in the Lord
Psalm 33: 11-22 (parts) The plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth— he who forms the hearts of all, who
considers everything they do. The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in
you.
Different Kinds of Freedom
Divine Providence #73 (Swedenborg) All freedom is a matter of love, even to the point that love and freedom are the same thing. Since love is our life, freedom is
also essential to our life. Since we have many loves, some of which agree with each other and some of which disagree, it follows that we likewise have many kinds of freedom. All of us have earthly freedom by heredity. It is what makes us love nothing but ourselves and the world, and at first it is all there is to our life. Thinking and intending evil is our earthly freedom. Spiritual freedom comes from a love for eternal life. The only people who arrive at this love and its
pleasure are people who think that evils are sins and therefore do not want to do them, and who at the same time turn toward the Lord. The moment we do this, we are in spiritual freedom. This kind of freedom comes from an inner or higher love; it grows stronger as our earthly freedom wanes and becomes subservient. We can all arrive at this kind of freedom if we are just willing to think that there is an eternal life and that the temporary pleasure and bliss of life in time is like a
passing shadow compared to the eternal pleasure and bliss of life in eternity. We can think this way if we want to, because the Lord constantly gives us the power to do so.
