Spiritual Peace
Be still and know God
When we greet someone we might say "Hello". The ancients had a different word for this: Shalom - which means "peace". Jesus expanded this idea when he said:
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."  John 14:27

One of the great goals of a spiritual life is to experience this peace.  ~ Frank Rose

Pastor on Vacation - July 3-10
Elise and I are taking a 1-week break for a family reunion with my siblings and their spouses. We will return Monday night, July 10 and I'll be back in the office on Tuesday July 11.
 Feel free to contact either of us by cell phone or email.

Guest Preacher, Frank Rose - July 9
Thank you to Frank for once again leading the Sunday service this Sunday when I am on vacation. His topic will be "peace" - a great follow-up to last Sunday's focus on freedom.

Serve More People Team Meeting
How can we, as a congregation of caring people, serve the Lord best? This is something a team is discussing in occasional meetings. Last year we focused on serving people through the Celebration of the Chapel’s 30th Anniversary!
This year we are brainstorming ways to increase our care—for each other and for those beyond our small group.
Join us next Sunday, July 16 after the luncheon for this continued conversation and planning.

With love and respect,
Nathan

Below is the current task
Task 6 Dealing with Fairness
Notice if any of your troubled thoughts and feelings are related to indignation about unfairness. Let go of the idea that life is supposed to be fair, and see if you can find contentment with your lot in life.

I plan to start another group in August or September.
Love, Frank Rose

Phone Directory Update
Mary Magdalene in awe
When you are at the Chapel, please help yourself to a Sunrise Chapel phone directory, fresh off the press! We do our best to make it as accurate and up-to-date as possible, AND we rely on you for any corrections or changes! Please let Élise or me know about any changes as soon as possible. We expect to mail this out to members who live a distance or who don’t attend regularly.
Note that this directory is for church community-building, keeping up connections, and encouraging healthy relationships. Thank you for not using it to engage in any kind of non church-related business or marketing or solicitation.   ~Nathan

Readings for this Sunday

Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength,
     an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
     and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
     and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
     the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
     God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
     he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
     the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Come and see what the Lord has done,
     the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
     to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
     he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
     I will be exalted among the nations,
     I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us;
     the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Mark 4: 35-41
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”
Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Peace
Heaven and Hell n. 288 (Emanuel Swedenborg)
Since peace means the oneness of the Divine itself and the divine human in the Lord and the union of the Lord with heaven and with the church and with everyone in heaven, and also with everyone in the church who accepts him, the Sabbath was instituted as a reminder of these matters and was named for quietness and peace. It became the holiest symbol of the church, which is why the Lord called himself the Lord of the Sabbath.

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.
