Help in Our Efforts to Stay Positive
|
|
How do you maintain a positive outlook when negatives strike? Negative thoughts and emotions come in a variety of delivery methods. Sometimes they arrive routinely, almost
expectedly, as we go about our daily interactions. "I knew it." "I saw that coming." "Right on schedule!" Other times they come as surprises out of the blue, like flashes of lightning or rumblings of thunder. "What was that about?" "Where did that come from?" "Did I push your button?" How are we supposed to handle such negative interruptions? See below for a few interesting quotations from the Bible and Swedenborg's
works.
Children's Talks on the 23rd Psalm Next up in this series of children's talks about the beloved 23rd Psalm, we'll look at the importance of shepherds
managing sheep and predators using the ever-present tools of the trade - the rod and staff. From the perspective of a sheep, the Psalmist said, "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me." In addition to learning about the Psalm and its internal meaning, I'm also learning some of the fascinating history of shepherding in Arizona. Come learn with me!
New music this Sunday I'm hearing appreciation for the new music that our musicians, Pablo, Katrina, and Nenah, are introducing in our church services. This Sunday we will try another upbeat tune, "I Will Sing of Your Love Forever." And thank you for your willingness to learn new music and to support the development of our music ministry. "Arizona Mountain Camp Potluck" This Sunday is our normal day of the month to hold "camp lunch." It's potluck-style, so bring a covered dish if you want to participate. We will hold another informal planning meeting to check in and keep up the energy for deciding on a location and a time for camp next year. All welcome!
"Open Studio Tours" - Trish
Wann Although not a Sunrise Chapel sponsored event, I do want to encourage you to attend the art studio tour of our friend and longtime Sunrise Chapel supporter, Trish Wann. Small Group Study of Topics from Swedenborg - Mondays at 2 pm
|
|
This is a small group to dig into a smorgasbord of Swedenborgian topics. Our resources are video podcasts by two friends, Curtis Childs and Jonathan Rose. These two (and their amazing support team) are producing great programs to spread really helpful information from a Swedenborgian
perspective (1) about how to handle life’s ups and downs and (2) about understanding the Bible. Let me explain...
This Monday we'll be viewing an episode from Curtis Childs’ You Tube Channel called “offTheLeftEye”. In just a few years he has gained over 53 thousand subscribers and over 9 million views, and he has a vibrant online community of people from all over the world tuning in to
his excellent broadcasts. They are fast-paced, information-packed, down-to-earth at the same time as being uplifting and “spiritual.” He has so many thought-provoking shows on different topics and of various lengths of time. Currently we are focusing on a few of these episodes.
Join the fun! We resume this weekly meeting Monday, September 25 at 2 pm at Sunrise Chapel. ~Nathan

The Israelites Fear God's Presence
Exodus 20:18,19,21 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain [Sinai] in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to
Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.” The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
Don't Be Deceived Matthew 24:3-5, 23-27 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “...what will be the sign of your coming and
of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time. “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’
do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
False Things Standing in the Way Secrets of Heaven 309 The Biblical account of the Garden of Eden refers to "the flame of a sword turning itself". This symbolizes self-love with
its mad desires and delusions, which are such that although we want to enter [the garden], we are carried in the opposite direction, toward bodily and earthly preoccupations. So many quotations from the Word are available to prove this symbolism that they would fill pages. Let me offer only these words from Ezekiel:
Prophesy, and you are to say, “This is what Jehovah has said: ‘Say, “A
sword! A sword sharpened and even polished for committing slaughter, sharpened to have a flash of lightning to it!” Let the sword be used again a third time, the sword of its victims, the sword of much stabbing, penetrating to them in their private rooms, so that their heart will dissolve; and it will multiply the stumbling blocks in all their gates. I have put a terror of a sword there; oh, it has turned into lightning!’” (Ezekiel 21:9, 10, 14, 15)
This sword stands for our desolation... desolation to the point where we see not a bit of goodness or truth but only the false things that stand in the way.
