Sunrise Chapel weekly update - Lift Your Perspective

Published: Fri, 10/20/17

Looking up
I love this photo. It ties in nicely with the Halloween Party tonight in the Celebration Garden at the church. And it also shows the power of human imagination to dream of future possibilities.
Spirituality and theology - the study of God - offer tools to lift our inner perspective and help us see our world from God's point of view.
This Sunday we'll explore this topic with a focus on a few key ideas from the Bible and Swedenborg.

Halloween Party Time!!
TONIGHT, Friday, October 20 starting at 6:00 - ALL AGES
See below for a photo from last year's event - which was a lot of fun! Get dressed in a costume, and come on down to the "Celebration Garden" at the back of the Sunrise Chapel property.  Socializing, music, food, games, and fun for the whole family!  Want to get involved? Thank you to a whole bunch of people for putting a lot of time and energy into planning, setting up, and helping make this a fun, social, relaxing event!
Claudia and Kim Osmus, Anita Tifft, Betsy and Steve Gladish, Tom and Linda Waddell, Mike and Dale Villeburn, Johanna Von Mayr, Kevin and Christine Morey, Elise Gladish, and others behind the scenes.

Children's Talks on the 23rd Psalm
Next up in this series of children's talks about the beloved 23rd Psalm - "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." How does this apply to sheep, and what does it mean for us spiritually? This is the second-to-last phrase.

Fundraiser Concert - Eduardo Costa - November 12 at 2:30 pm
Once again we are welcoming the public to Eduardo's awesome live classical guitar concert - here at Sunrise Chapel. Although Eduardo plays regularly at other local venues throughout the year, and he has concerts out of town, Sunrise Chapel is his exclusive venue for Tucson concerts. He is billing this as his best concert ever! Set aside Sunday, November 12 for a wonderful afternoon concert starting at 2:30 pm.
Tickets are available on-line from www.MasterGuitarOnline.com/eduardo. Tickets are $20, and are also available at the door if space permits.

Only 46 Days till Our Path to Bethlehem!!
Reminder: Our well-loved, annual, outdoor live nativity - the Path to Bethlehem - will  be held on the first Saturday of December. That's December 2, 2017. About 6 weeks away! Please set aside that date for this very special public event.

WANTED: HOMEMADE COOKIES FOR THE PATH TO BETHLEHEM
In honor of our “Cookie Lady,” Fran Blaesing, we are continuing the tradition of offering homemade goods to everyone who attends this special event. If you want to contribute to this fun service project (either with baked goods or funds towards supplies) talk with Cheri Reynolds.

With love and respect,
Nathan

Small Group Study of Topics from Swedenborg - Mondays at 2 pm
Mary Magdalene in awe
I LOVE THIS WEEKLY GROUP!
We have great discussions and are learning a lot together.
Our resources are video podcasts by two friends, Curtis Childs and Jonathan Rose. These two (and their amazing support team) are producing great programs to spread really helpful information from a Swedenborgian perspective (1) about how to handle life’s ups and downs and (2) about understanding the Bible.

This Monday we'll be viewing another episode from Curtis Childs’ You Tube Channel called “offTheLeftEye”. In just  a few years he has gained over 53 thousand subscribers and over 9 million views, and he has a vibrant online community of people from all over the world tuning in to his excellent broadcasts. They are fast-paced, information-packed, down-to-earth at the same time as being uplifting and “spiritual.”
Here is Curtis’ home page link: https://www.youtube.com/user/offTheLeftEye/featured
He has so many thought-provoking shows on different topics and of various lengths of time. Currently we are focusing on a few of these episodes.

Join the study and fun!
Weekly meetings on Monday at 2 pm at Sunrise Chapel.

Invest in Spiritual Wealth
Mary Magdalene in awe
A Small Group Presentation by Michael Brown
Sunday, November 5 from 9:30-10:45 AM
in Sunrise Chapel Library

We have the means to be spiritually wealthy. Webster's says the original definition of wealth was “well-being.” The Bible and the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg teach us how to increase our spiritual well-being -- spiritual wealth. You will receive your own copy of “A Guide to Spiritual Wealth.” It will be our guide for a discussion about how we are blessed by the spiritual wealth in our lives.

Reading/lesson for Reflection

A fairly long, but fascinating reading about raising our perspective
True Christianity 70 (Swedenborg)
The more we follow the divine design in the way we live, the more fully we are in God because of God’s omnipresence. Because God is omnipresent he is intrinsically present, so to speak, everywhere in his divine design, in the sense that he is the divine design.

Now, because we have been created as forms of the divine design, God is in us. But this is true only to the extent that we fully follow the divine design in the way we live. When we do not follow that design in the way we live, God is still in us, but is only in the highest parts of us, making it possible for us to understand what is true and intend what is good. That is, he gives us a capacity to understand and an inclination to love. The more we go against the divine design in the way we live, however, the more we bar the lower levels of our minds or spirits and prevent God from descending into them and filling them with his presence. As a result, God is in us but we are not in God.

There is a common saying in heaven: God is in all of us, the evil as well as the good, but we are not in God unless we follow the divine design in the way we live. The Lord says that he wants us to be in him and him to be in us (John 15:4).

The more we allow ourselves to be restored to the divine design, the more thoroughly present God is in each of us; consequently to a greater extent God is in us and we are in God…

The more we are in harmony with the divine design, the more spiritual heat and light, or to put it another way, the more of love’s goodness and wisdom’s true perspective we have.
