Help in Our Efforts to Stay Positive

One definition of awfulizing is "to react dramatically or catastrophically to distressing events." Sometimes it's as easy as falling off a log! The demons
love such reactions. But what alternatives do we have in our spiritual toolkit to reduce the incidence and the harmful effects of awfulizing? See below for some intriguing Biblical examples that seem to describe this challenging state of mind and heart. Children's Talks on the 23rd Psalm Next up in this series of children's talks about the beloved 23rd Psalm - "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." In last Sunday's talk, I enjoyed giving
all the children a walking stick to enact shepherds using a rod or a staff to take care of their sheep. I love how cooperative the children are during the talks. And all the "sheep" in the chairs were also very well-mannered! (No one was hurt in the enactment!)
This Sunday we'll explore what it means for the shepherd to "prepare a table" for the
sheep.
More new music this Sunday If you like the new music that our musicians, Pablo, Katrina, and Nenah are introducing in our church services, let them know. This Sunday we will try another upbeat tune, "We Bow
Down." "Open Studio Tours" - Trish Wann - This weekend Although not a Sunrise Chapel sponsored event, I do want to encourage you to
attend the art studio tour of our friend and longtime Sunrise Chapel supporter, Trish Wann. She is showing her original artwork as well as other art books and videotapes. It is part of the largest "open studio tour" in Arizona, and she will be open on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1 from 10 am - 4 pm. Find her at 7600 E Rio Verde Drive (north
of Tanque Verde near where it intersects with Dos Hombres). For more information on the Tucson-wide event, go to www.openstudiotours.com
Halloween Party Time!! Set aside Friday, October 20 from 6:30-8:30 for a PARTY! See below for a photo from last year's event - which was a lot of fun! Get dressed in a costume, and come on down to the "Celebration Garden" at the back of the Sunrise Chapel property. Socializing, music, food, games, and fun for the whole family!
Only 64 Days till The Path to Bethlehem!! Reminder: Our well-loved, annual, outdoor live nativity - the Path to Bethlehem - will be held on the first Saturday of December. That's December
2, 2017. Only about two months away! Not too soon for us to start planning! Please set aside that date for this very special public event.
With love and respect,
Nathan

Small Group Study of Topics from Swedenborg - Mondays at 2 pm
|
|
This is a small group to dig into a smorgasbord of Swedenborgian topics. Our resources are video podcasts by two friends, Curtis Childs and Jonathan Rose. These two (and their amazing support team) are producing great programs to spread really helpful information from a Swedenborgian
perspective (1) about how to handle life’s ups and downs and (2) about understanding the Bible.
This Monday we'll be viewing another episode from Curtis Childs’ You Tube Channel called “offTheLeftEye”. In just a few years he has gained over 53 thousand subscribers and over 9 million views, and he has a vibrant online community of people from all over the world tuning in to his
excellent broadcasts. They are fast-paced, information-packed, down-to-earth at the same time as being uplifting and “spiritual.” He has so many thought-provoking shows on different topics and of various lengths of time. Currently we are focusing on a few of these episodes.
Join the study and fun! Weekly meetings on Monday at 2 pm at Sunrise Chapel.

A Dream of an Awful Beast Daniel 7:1,7,11 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying in bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream... "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast — terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had
large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns... I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire."
Jesus Describes People's Apprehensions
Luke 21: 6-10, 20,25-26 Some of Jesus' disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many
will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven... “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know
that its desolation is near... “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken."
Various Kinds of
Personal Struggles Secrets of Heaven 847 (parts) There are many kinds of struggle. The general types are heaven-oriented, spiritual, and earthly, and it is important to avoid confusing them. Only those who love the Lord are subject to heaven-oriented trials. Spiritual trials come to those who have charity for their fellow human. Earthly tribulation has nothing to do with the other two kinds, and it is not really a trial, or temptation, but merely anxiety rising
out of an attack on earthly kinds of love. The anxiety is stirred by misfortune, illness, or various bodily conditions. This brief discussion can give some idea of what is involved in our trials: distress and anxiety over things that conflict with what we love. Earthly trials, which many people call temptations... are merely an anxiety sparked by an assault on what they love. Examples are times when they worry that they will be, or feel that they have been, deprived of their
position, worldly goods, reputation, physical pleasures, bodily life, and so on.
