Gratitude in action at Thanksgiving

Published: Fri, 11/17/17

What if we make gratitude a practice?
This Sunday is our Thanksgiving worship service, followed by our Thanksgiving luncheon!  I look forward to a great service on the positive topic of gratitude. Not just the contemplation of it, but the practice, and how it can change lives.

Only 2 Weeks till Our Path to Bethlehem!!
Reminder: Our well-loved, annual, outdoor live nativity - the Path to Bethlehem - will  be held on the first Saturday of December. That's December 2, 2017. Please set aside that date for this very special public event. A wonderful way to welcome the Christmas season.

WANTED: HOMEMADE COOKIES FOR THE PATH TO BETHLEHEM
In honor of our “Cookie Lady,” Fran Blaesing, we are continuing the tradition of offering homemade goods to everyone who attends this special event. If you want to contribute to this fun service project (either with baked goods or funds towards supplies) talk with Cheri Reynolds.

A Wealth of Fascinating Videos for Discussion - Mondays at 2 pm
Mary Magdalene in awe
NO MEETING THIS MONDAY, November 20

We are taking a break this week to focus on preparations for the Path to Bethlehem. Stay tuned for the next meeting to take a fascinating look at various spiritual topics. Each video is packed with material for discussion.
Our resources are video podcasts by two friends, Curtis Childs and Jonathan Rose. These two (and their amazing support team) are producing great programs to spread really helpful information from a Swedenborgian perspective (1) about how to handle life’s ups and downs and (2) about understanding the Bible.

Each Monday we view parts of an episode from Curtis Childs’ You Tube Channel called “offTheLeftEye”. We hit pause many times throughout each meeting to share questions and ideas with each other. It's really educational and also just fun.
Each video is fast-paced, information-packed, down-to-earth at the same time as being uplifting and “spiritual.”
Here is Curtis’ home page link: https://www.youtube.com/user/offTheLeftEye/featured
He has so many thought-provoking shows on different topics and of various lengths of time. Currently we are focusing on a few of these episodes.

Join the study and fun!
ALMOST weekly meetings on Monday at 2 pm at Sunrise Chapel. No meeting on November 20.

Readings/lessons for Reflection

Humility and Gratitude
Secrets of Heaven 5957
Everything that flows from the Lord by way of the internal into the external or natural is freely given. Our humility, worship, thanksgiving, and much else, seem like repayment, so that the Lord's gifts do not seem to be free. But the Lord does not demand those things for His own sake, for the Divine derives no glory at all from a person's humility, worship, or thanksgiving. It is utterly inconceivable that any self-love should exist within the Divine, causing Him to require such actions for His own sake. Rather, they are required for our own sake, for if we possess humility we are able to accept goodness from the Lord, since in that case we have been separated from self-love and its evils which are the obstacle, and they stand in the way of accepting that goodness. Therefore the Lord desires a state of humility in us for our sake, because the Lord can flow in with heavenly good when that state exists in us. The same applies to worship and thanksgiving.
