Sunrise Chapel weekly update - Spiritual Wealth

Published: Fri, 11/03/17

What is Spiritual Wealth?
Many years ago, the word "wealth" meant a state of "well being." Thank you to Michael Brown for emphasizing this in his book "A Guide to Spiritual Wealth," which he will be introducing this Sunday at 9:30 am as a small group experience in Sunrise Chapel's library. Everyone is welcome, and you will receive a copy of the book.
The service at 11 am will also feature this idea of investing in spiritual wealth. What does that look like in our daily lives?
As is our recent custom, the Holy Supper will be offered toward the end of the Sunday service. We serve this special, symbolic meal every other month on the first Sunday of the month. (The next time will be January 7, 2018.)

Children's Talks on the 23rd Psalm
This Sunday will be our final talk for the children about the 23rd Psalm. The focus will be the phrase: "And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Fundraiser Concert - Eduardo Costa - November 12 at 2:30 pm
Next Sunday!!
I'm really looking forward to Eduardo's awesome live classical guitar concert - here at Sunrise Chapel. Although Eduardo plays regularly at other local venues throughout the year, and he has concerts out of town, Sunrise Chapel is his exclusive venue for Tucson concerts. He is billing this as his best concert ever! Set aside Sunday, November 12 for a wonderful afternoon concert starting at 2:30 pm.
Tickets are available on-line from www.MasterGuitarOnline.com/eduardo. Tickets are $20, and are also available at the door.

Only 28 Days till Our Path to Bethlehem!!
Reminder: Our well-loved, annual, outdoor live nativity - the Path to Bethlehem - will  be held on the first Saturday of December. That's December 2, 2017. Just 4 weeks away! Please set aside that date for this very special public event. A wonderful way to welcome the Christmas season.

WANTED: HOMEMADE COOKIES FOR THE PATH TO BETHLEHEM
In honor of our “Cookie Lady,” Fran Blaesing, we are continuing the tradition of offering homemade goods to everyone who attends this special event. If you want to contribute to this fun service project (either with baked goods or funds towards supplies) talk with Cheri Reynolds.

With love and respect,
Nathan

The Front "Monument" Garden will get an overhaul
Mary Magdalene in awe
A landscape architect's sketch of the garden redo.
One of our young Boy Scouts is making his "Life Project" a refresh of the front garden where the "monument" is. The work will be done in stages, with the Boy Scouts doing the initial resculpting of the area as the first phase. Later, plans include installing new irrigation, adding butterfly-friendly plants and shrubs, and building a short path to add to the rest of the paths on the property. The first work day is set for Saturday, November 4, during which many Boy Scouts and their parents will converge on the site to help with this transformation.

Invest in Spiritual Wealth -- THIS SUNDAY AT 9:30
Mary Magdalene in awe
A Small Group Presentation by Michael Brown
Sunday, November 5 from 9:30-10:45 AM
in Sunrise Chapel Library

We have the means to be spiritually wealthy. Webster's says the original definition of wealth was “well-being.” The Bible and the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg teach us how to increase our spiritual well-being -- spiritual wealth. You will receive your own copy of “A Guide to Spiritual Wealth.” It will be our guide for a discussion about how we are blessed by the spiritual wealth in our lives.

A Wealth of Fascinating Videos for Discussion - Mondays at 2 pm

WE ARE STILL MEETING WEEKLY!
Join us for a fascinating look at various spiritual topics. Each video is packed with material for discussion.
Our resources are video podcasts by two friends, Curtis Childs and Jonathan Rose. These two (and their amazing support team) are producing great programs to spread really helpful information from a Swedenborgian perspective (1) about how to handle life’s ups and downs and (2) about understanding the Bible.

Each Monday we view parts of an episode from Curtis Childs’ You Tube Channel called “offTheLeftEye”. We hit pause many times throughout each meeting to share questions and ideas with each other. It's really educational and also just fun.
Each video is fast-paced, information-packed, down-to-earth at the same time as being uplifting and “spiritual.”
Here is Curtis’ home page link: https://www.youtube.com/user/offTheLeftEye/featured
He has so many thought-provoking shows on different topics and of various lengths of time. Currently we are focusing on a few of these episodes.

Join the study and fun!
Weekly meetings on Monday at 2 pm at Sunrise Chapel.

Readings/lessons for Reflection

The Value of Wisdom
Job 28
:12,15,28
“Where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?  It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver. The price of wisdom is beyond rubies. The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”

What do you Treasure?
Luke 12
:32-34
Jesus said to His disciples, "Do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Spiritual Wealth - Goodness!
Secrets of Heaven
113
Nothing is more common in the Word than for gold to symbolize and represent the goodness that belongs to wisdom or to love. All the gold used for the ark, the Temple, the golden table, the lampstands, the utensils, and Aaron’s garments had this symbolism and representation.
The prophets use gold in a similar way. In Ezekiel, for instance:
In your wisdom and in your understanding you made yourself riches, and you made gold and silver for your treasuries. (Ezekiel 28:4)
This explicitly states that gold and silver (goodness and truth) come from wisdom and understanding. Silver here symbolizes truth, as does the silver in the tabernacle and the Temple.
The sages from the East, when they came to Jesus at his birth and fell on their faces and worshiped him:
They opened their treasure chests and offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:1, 11)
Here too gold symbolizes goodness.
