Pre-forgiveness topic: Our spiritual ego system

Published: Fri, 01/19/18

The Sunday before we start "Practicing Forgiveness"
Why do people do hurtful things?
Last Sunday I focused on ideas around "self" control, especially identifying which "self" we allow to be in control? We are made of different spiritual parts - each of which we can refer to as an "I."  "I am happy" or "I am upset," etc. Think of it as our "internal ego system."
This Sunday, I'll take this a step further and consider what causes us to have these different parts, these various "I"s, especially the ones that lead to hurting ourselves or others. This is good preparation for our upcoming series on Practicing Forgiveness, which starts next Sunday, January 28. The Lord's Word gives us a spiritual perspective on this ego system so that we can clear out or let go of what is interfering with our goal of experiencing heavenly joy!

Thank you for your gifts!
Dear friends,
Elise and I are so grateful for your generosity over the Christmas season! Not only your gifts, but your loving presence. What a great season of inspiration, starting with our annual Path to Bethlehem, and concluding with lovely gatherings on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Every time you show up - for whatever reason - I feel a sense of gratitude that here is someone who cares about Sunrise Chapel, cares about the New Church, and yes, who even cares about Elise and me. We feel privileged to live and work here and blessed by our friendships, our connections, and our shared usefulness.

Thinking of you with love and respect,
Nathan

New Journey of Spiritual Growth Starting Soon!

We start PRACTICING FORGIVENESS on Sunday, January 28!
Well, actually, you can start forgiving anytime, but that's when we'll learn about it in church services and small groups.

This could be our best Journey program yet. Thank you to our good friends at New Church Outreach for putting it together. Some congregations did this course in the Fall. As is our custom, we are taking it up in the Winter, with our final session just before the weekend of the Tucson Festival of Books (in March).

Books have arrived! We are starting to organize small groups to meet weekly starting the week of January 28.

* The first small group will be led by Michael Brown on Sunday morning, Jan. 28 at 9:30 am.

* The Thursday night Women's group is already planning to engage in the topic starting on Thursday evening February 1 at 7 pm.

Questions about groups? Contact Elise or me - Nathan.

This Sunday's Board of Directors Meeting

This Sunday after our luncheon, our Board will be discussing aspects of a draft of revised strategic plans, including our budget for the coming fiscal year and our annual request for financial support from our church headquarters. It has always been our goal to become a locally financially independent congregation, but it is increasingly challenging as the culture of church participation changes. We need to remain creative and energetic about continuing care for everyone who is dedicated and loyal to the church at the same time as we do all we can to serve more people. Your financial support of Sunrise Chapel is an important part. Thank you for every contribution and for all your service.

Life Line Screening
Life Line Screening is once again using Friendship Hall for personal health assessments on Thursday, February 1. Here is some information about what they offer and how you can register. (Pre-registration is required.)

The "6 for Life Health Assessment" measures your risk of developing 6 chronic diseases, including heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, diabetes, COPD and lung cancer.  A customized report will determine which risk factors contribute most to your disease risk and are within your control to change.  Finger-stick blood tests along with biometric measurements are included with this assessment. These are separate from our vascular screenings.
Sunrise Chapel will be hosting a Life Line Screening preventive health event on Thursday, February 1, 2018.

Protect your health by registering today for the 6 for Life Health Assessment for $79. Call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the word circle to 797979 to schedule your appointment.  Take control of your health. Knowledge is empowering.

Reading for Reflection on this Sunday's topic

The Key to Understanding our "Ego System"
Secrets of Heaven 6206 - Swedenborg

It should be recognized that all evil flows in from hell and all good from the Lord by way of heaven. The reason however why evil becomes a person's own is that we believe and convince ourselves that we think and practice it all by ourselves. In this way we makes it our own. But if we believed what is really so, it would not be evil but good from the Lord that became our own. For if we believed what is really so we would think, the instant evil flowed in, that it came from the evil spirits present with us; and since that was what we thought the angels could ward that evil off and repel it. For influx from angels takes place into what a person knows and believes, not what we do not know or believe; there is nowhere else for it to become firmly established than in something the person knows or believes.

"Blessed is everyone who hears the Word of God and keeps it."
