Practicing Forgiveness week 5: Transformation

Published: Fri, 02/23/18

This Sunday we continue "Practicing Forgiveness"

Forgiveness Leads to Transformation
One of the significant things about forgiveness is that it can take a painful experience and invite us into a personal transformation that becomes healing.
One Biblical story of such transformation is of Jesus forgiving a paralyzed man and the miraculous results, not only for the man but also for all who witnessed.
Such a transformation is compared to a variety of changes in the physical world, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. In what ways has forgiveness helped you with personal changes? What changes would you like to experience going forward?

Thank you to Teresa Campbell for adding to our message last Sunday! It was very touching to hear her personal story of the value and practice of self-forgiveness and her own use of uplifting affirmations to strengthen her spirit and create love and joy.

Small groups continuing!
See below for more info.
I am continually appreciative of the value of our small groups. So much good work is being accomplished, and people are also getting to know each other better and building spiritual community. Way to grow!

New Groups Forming for Spiritual Growth Tasks
Once this Journey program on Forgiveness concludes, I encourage everyone to continue in a small group or join in. At the Tucson Festival of Books (see below) we will be inviting people who come to our booth to sign up for a small group to focus on the Spiritual Growth Tasks in the new "card deck" (see below).

  * Frank Rose will lead one Wednesday nights starting March 14 at 6:30-8:00 pm in the Chapel.
  * I will lead one on Thursday afternoons starting March 15 at 3:00-4:30 pm in the Chapel.
  * I will also lead one at the Ada Peirce McCormick Building on the U of A campus. (Day and time to be determined) Please contact me if you are interested in meeting there.

Thinking of you with love and respect,
 Nathan

Current Journey of Spiritual Growth!

People are saying this is such an important topic, and the text is packed. The groups are going well!
There is no tuition or registration fee to participate in a group, though donations are certainly welcome. Contact Elise to get your copy of the book ($12).

We started PRACTICING FORGIVENESS on Sunday, January 28! The small groups are very enriching. Our final Sunday of this series will be March 4.

Thank you to our good friends at New Church Outreach for putting it together. Some sister congregations did this course in the Fall. Others are doing it at the same time as we are. Our final Sunday of the series (March 4) is timed for the weekend just before the Tucson Festival of Books.

Preparations for the Tucson Festival of Books Booth 254

This Year's Booth #254
COME VISIT US AT THE TUCSON FESTIVAL OF BOOKS -
Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11.
This year we will continue promoting Choose Joy Now and the Joy of Spiritual Growth!
We will also share the booth with author Frank Rose!
And we welcome Michelle Chapin from Bryn Athyn, PA to support our efforts. Michelle works in our headquarter's Office of Outreach and is totally on board with spiritual growth groups. Last year one of her colleagues, Sasha Silverman, came out for the Festival and it was great. It's fun to share the love with others who love this work.
Questions? Contact me, Elise Gladish, Kelly Woofenden, or Frank Rose.

Readings for Reflection on this Sunday's topic

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed  Man
Mark 2:1-12
When Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Spiritual Change Represented in Earthly Transformations
True Christianity 687 - Swedenborg
In the world, the process of being regenerated is represented by various things. For example, by the flowering of all things on earth in springtime and the ensuing stages of growth to the point of bearing fruit.
It is also represented in a general way by the constant renewal of all things in the body. Blood is constantly being purified of worn-out elements and renewed and in a sense regenerated. If we look even to the lowliest creatures on earth, we see an image of the process of regeneration in the miraculous transformation of silkworms, and of many other grubs and caterpillars into nymphs and butterflies, and of other creatures that in time are embellished with wings.
In brief, the whole world on every level of existence is full of symbols
and emblems of regeneration.

"Blessed is everyone who hears the Word of God and keeps it."
