When do you have just the right level of confidence?
|
|
Are you under-confident, over-confident, or right where you want to be? It can be a tricky balance. Last Sunday, Father's Day, I snow skied for the
first time in my life. For some strange reason I thought it would be easier than it was. Perhaps I was over-confident. Then when I completely lost control, my confidence swung the opposite direction. I almost gave up.
The Lord wants us to have strong confidence, but what does spiritual confidence look like? Let's explore the sweet spot between over- and under-confidence. The kind of confidence that brings true
peace.
The Lord's Prayer Next Sunday Pastor Emeritus, Frank Rose, will continue his series of sermons on The Lord's Prayer while I am attending Council of the Clergy meetings. In fact, while I am traveling this summer for several reasons, Frank will lead four
more services, and each time he will take up another aspect of The Lord's Prayer. Here is his schedule and the topics: June 17 - The Lord’s Prayer July 1 - Our Daily Bread July 8 - Forgive us July 15 - Deliver us August 19 - Praise
God
A New Edition of our Church Phone Directory Copies of Sunrise Chapel's updated phone directory are now available. Just pick one up at the church or send me or Elise a request. Thanks to everyone for
keeping in touch with one another! We strive to be a friendly, caring, supportive community.
Selecting a New Executive Bishop for our Church Starting on Tuesday June 26, the Council of the Clergy for our global church organization will meet in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania for annual professional meetings. One of the
key items of business is to elect a new Executive Bishop who will take office in July 2019. Assuming someone is elected by the Clergy and then affirmed by the Board of Directors, that minister will train for the position until the current Executive Bishop, Brian Keith, retires (in June 2019).I will be one of about 100 other ministers who will participate in this selection process. Six candidates were nominated earlier in the
year. You can read about each of the candidates on www.newchurch.org. Either go to the home page and look for the button "Bishop Selection Information" or go directly to this link: https://newchurch.org/home-engrave/bishop-selection-information/ These are the names (in alphabetical order) of the
candidates: Erik Buss Peter Buss, Jr. Glenn "Mac" Frazier Bradley Heinrichs David Lindrooth Derrick Lumsden Ministers in our denomination will come to these meetings from many countries throughout the world. Four whole-group sessions are scheduled over three days (Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday) dedicated to the selection process, and a fifth session is scheduled for a follow-up interview with the selected nominee. The nomination will then go to the General Church Board of Directors' meeting for their consideration. I have talked with a number of Sunrise Chapel folks about this process, and I would love to hear from more of you. Just contact me anytime prior to the meetings either in
person, by phone, or write me a note. I'd love to hear what you think.

Update on Arizona Mountain Camp July 13-22,
2018
|
Registration Form: The registration form is now available at the church (in the lobby) and on Sunrise Chapel.org.
THEME: "Choosing Joy in the Forest!" The first weekend of our Arizona Mountain Camp this year will be "traditional" in terms of activities we have enjoyed in
previous years - worshiping together, crafts, small groups, etc. Since we are featuring the new "card deck" of 52 spiritual growth task cards, I am proposing that we have an overall theme of "Choosing Joy." And here are suggested daily themes, each of which will relate to one spiritual growth task per day: Friday, July 13: In The Woods Saturday, July 14: The Wildlife Sunday, July 15: The Mountains Monday, July 16: The
Trails
If you want a more relaxed, more informal, and reflective experience come up anytime Monday afternoon, July 16 through Sunday
afternoon, July 22. This will be a time for anyone, especially parents and grandparents with young children, to enjoy community with activities planned as the spirit moves people. Location: The camp is about 150 miles from Sunrise Chapel, about 45 miles north of Globe. Workman's Creek is part of the watershed that empties into the Salt River Valley below and then forms Roosevelt Lake. The road that ascends from the Salt River in the valley to the campground reminds me of going up Mt. Lemmon before there were any guardrails. Beautiful vistas. The final mile to the camp is on a lightly maintained dirt road (approximately 1 mile). Map: From Sunrise Chapel, the drive to camp is at least 3 hours and 15 minutes depending on the condition of the roads. Here is a link to a page of maps. http://www.elks4kids.org/campmap.html Elks Lodge information: http://www.elks4kids.org/camp.html You Tube video: https://youtu.be/LSRQUgVCMhc We have reserved the camp from Friday, July 13 through Sunday, July 22. Anyone is invited to be part of the planning team. Linda Waddell has offered to organize meal planning and preparation. Christine Morey has offered to be the Camp Director.
The registration form is completed.
You can download it from our website sunrisechapel.org or pick one up at the church. Nathan

We are SO close to meeting
our Matching Fund Goals!
|
|
We met one matching goal, and we are about to meet the other! Last Sunday we received a $20 donation towards the current Asplundh Foundation Fund
match. Now all we have left to raise is $117.00 by June 30.
To put this into perspective, the Asplundh Foundation is gifting us $9,250, so that's like your $10 donation being matched 925 times!
Thank you for your generosity and support. Please consider donating to this important cause. One of the projects this grant will fund is the equipment and various subscriptions to live stream our church services.
Last week we made a big step by completing the 3-month construction and installation of new high speed internet service. This will allow the bandwidth we need to stream video without buffering.
Also, June 30 is the end of our fiscal year — a very good time to show your support with an extra donation to our general operating budget - if you can.
If you write a check, make it to Sunrise Chapel. Please note which fund you are contributing towards. Or you could use Pay Pal to make a one-time or monthly donation. Go to www.sunrisechapel.org and click on the Give tab.

Readings for this

David's Confidence in the Lord Psalm 118:5-9,14 I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can mere mortals do to me? The Lord is for me among those who help
me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in humans. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes... The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.
Doubting Thomas Expresses Confidence in the Lord John 20:24-29 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was
with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Confidence and Peace Secrets of Heaven §8455 Swedenborg Within peace lies trust in the Lord: trust that he is in complete charge, takes care of everything, and leads it to a good ending. When we believe this, we are at peace, because we then fear nothing and have no worries about the future to disturb us. The more we love the Lord, the more we
enter this state. A state of peace does away with all evil, especially arrogant self-assurance... Peace lies at the core of all happiness and even of unhappiness in people committed to what is good. The more they shed their outer layers, then, the more a state of peace is revealed and they experience good fortune, bliss, and happiness, whose origin is the Lord himself.
