Blessed and broken I actually had this topic in mind weeks ago, long before I broke my wrist in my bicycle accident! It's a subject that everyone can relate to, since we have all experienced brokenness in some form, at various levels. Physical brokenness is one thing, an emotional break is another. Not all breakings are bad,
either. It's good to break a bad habit. And it's very meaningful to break bread together at a special celebration or during the holy supper. In a universal way, we are all blessed and broken, and the Lord is eager for us to find spiritual wholeness. Let's work on it together this Sunday!
"Secret" Sunday Last Sunday I took up an aspect of the
topic of secrecy and openness. Toward the end of my message, I referred to an interesting blog I discovered in my research. Here is the website for your reference: www.postsecret.com Each Sunday morning, the moderator of the blog site shares a number of secrets that he receives on postcards from people all over. Some secrets are silly, others are serious, still others are very soulful. The process of writing down a secret and sending it anonymously into the world can be part of
a therapeutic effort of personal change.
Children's Talk Series on Children in the Bible I'm excited about the series of talks that Frank Rose and I are doing this summer for the children in the Sunday church services. There are many stories in the Bible about children or involving children. Here is a list of ten with more to come after
this! 1. Miriam – June 17 (FSR) 2. The Widow's Son (and the oil) – June 24 (NDG) 3. The boy’s part in feeding the 5000 – July 1 (FSR) 4. Josiah restores worship of the Lord – July 8 (FSR) 5. David – July 15 (FSR) 6. Jesus as a 12-year-old – July 22 (NDG) 7. Jesus invites a little child into the midst – Aug 5 (NDG) 8. Samuel (hearing the Lord and talking with Eli) – Aug 12 (NDG)
9. Jairus’ daughter is revived – August 18 (FSR) 10. Joseph and the coat of many colors – August 26 (NDG)

Heading into surgery Friday at noon
|
|
I'm waving my hand to say I'll see you after surgery! Last Monday I had my second appointment with the orthopedic surgeon, and together we decided that it would be best if he went ahead with surgery on the fractured wrist. He will put some hardware in place so the radius will heal in the right position. I am optimistic that the
procedure will go well, and I will be in church this Sunday to talk about the subject of breaking and mending - something that applies to everyone in various ways. Thank you to everyone for you prayers, concern, and love.

Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
We've booked La Mariposa (at a discounted rate) for a dinner + dancing + auction fundraising event! NEW INFO: We have received several more donations for the auction from community
businesses! 1. An overnight stay at the luxurious Westward Look Resort and Spa 2. Car and Home Repair Kits from Ace Hardware at 22nd and Kolb 3. Beautiful locally made dining ware from HFCoors Pottery
Momentum continues to build for our first big fundraising event in a while. Thank you to Gail B for taking initiative to get us rolling. She has already received donations to cover the $500 deposit as well as the first of many other donations of goods and services for
the auction! In addition, we already have an out-of-town sponsor who is gifting $2,000 towards the success of the event! I am excited about the possibilities for this event, not just in terms of the fundraising, but the community-building that results from people working together toward a common goal. Mark your calendar, and set aside Friday night February 8th, 2019 for a fun night of socializing over dinner, music, dancing, and fundraising for a good cause. The idea is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal, entertainment, and an auction of goods and services that a broad audience
will bid on. This kind of event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration and lots of planning to pull it
off. The plan is to do a lot of preparation in the next couple of months since people get really busy in November and December; then pick up momentum again in January. Put a big star on Friday
February 8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Who will study the
Bible with me?
|
|
Once I get this broken wrist distraction out of the way, I will offer more opportunities for group Bible study. There are many ways of doing this, and what we settle on will depend on the interests of the group (or
groups).
I have already gotten replies from a few folks who are interested. Let me know if you are curious about studying the Bible in a group and what times of the week and day you prefer.

Sunrise Chapel Needs Summertime Donations
|
|
Please consider Sunrise Chapel in your charitable giving this month. Your dedication and support throughout the year is
invaluable. However, with folks going and coming on vacations, summertime is typically a time of lower attendance at church activities, which is often reflected in decreased donations. Have you considered setting up a regular, automatic donation to the Chapel's general operating
budget?
The PayPal button here as an option for one-time or monthly donation. If you write a check, make it to Sunrise Chapel.
Thank you from our Treasurer, Bill Smith

Good News of Salvation Isaiah 61:1-4 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the
Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his
splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. Do Not Break These Commands Matthew 5:17-19 Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you,
till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” The Meaning of a Broken Heart and Broken Spirit From Secrets of Heaven 9818 David wrote in the Psalms, “Create for me a clean
heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from before You, and do not take the spirit of Your holiness from me. Bring back to me the joy of Your salvation, and let a generous spirit uphold me. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 51:10-12, 17) 'A clean heart' stands for a will that detests evils, which are forms of uncleanness. 'A steadfast
spirit' stands for an understanding of and belief in truth. 'A broken spirit' and 'a broken heart' stand for a state of temptation and the consequent humbling of the life in both.
