Here is a photo of a prayer flag that's been waving in the wind over our labyrinth for many months The idea behind our activity some time ago was to bring our prayers "down to earth" in the tangible form of messages on cloth that would be hung above our labyrinth. These prayers have now figuratively blown to
the four winds, so we are taking time to formulate new prayers and creatively embody them on new cloths. Come this Sunday for a church service with a focus on what the Word teaches about "prayers that get answered," and I also invite you to participate in this collaborative, community activity to write and install new prayer flags above our labyrinth. All supplies will be provided, but if
you have something special you want to use, that's fine too. The cloths will be 12" x 12" square.
Thank you Frank Rose Thank you so much to Frank Rose for the recent series of five sermons on The Lord's Prayer.
Flood Relief Efforts in Kerala, India Please see below for information about this very challenging humanitarian crisis in India. More progress on the Big Benefit Fundraiser in
February See below for additional information. This week Gail B. landed another donation, this time from local artist Diana Madaras! Anyone can solicit donations from local businesses! (It would be useful to get a bit organized so we don't have several people going to the same business.) Raise your hand if you are willing to talk to someone at Gaslight Theater! What about Tanque Verde Guest Ranch? It doesn't hurt to
ask!
Children's Talk Series on Children in the Bible I'm excited about the series of talks that Frank Rose and I are doing this summer for the children in the Sunday church services. There are many stories in the Bible about children or involving children. Here is a list of ten with more to come after

Update at two weeks post-op
|
|
This x-ray isn't my wrist, but it's similar Today I saw x-rays of my wrist for the first time since surgery. I now have a sturdy plate and 11 screws in my radius holding everything in place as the bone heals. Interestingly, I didn't set off any security alarms at the airports I traveled through last week. Now it's just a
matter of continuing healing and gentle exercise to return full functioning. I am grateful for modern medical ingenuity and care. And I am especially grateful to everyone for your thoughtfulness throughout this temporary inconvenience. THANK YOU!! I will be back riding my bicycle in no time! Nathan

Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
We've booked La Maraposa (at a discounted rate) for a dinner + dancing + auction fundraising event! NEW INFO: Thanks to Gail B's efforts, we are now looking forward to a donation from the
Diana Madaras Gallery. We haven't received it yet, so we don't know what it is, but we know it will be a great addition to our auction!
Also, Gail wants everyone to know that ANYONE can solicit donations from businesses. She is really counting on others to participate in this! The more donations, the more fun, and the more potential for funds!
It is helpful to take
a copy of the “official” letter from the Pastor with you, and leave it with the appropriate person at the place of business. Copies of the letter and envelopes are on a table in the Chapel front lobby.
The idea of this gala is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal, entertainment, and an auction of goods and services that a broad audience will bid on. This kind of event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration and lots of planning to pull it off. The plan is to do a lot of preparation in the next couple of months since people get really busy in November and December; then pick up momentum again in January. Put a big star on Friday February 8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Scheduling a Bible

|
|
I am eager to get started with a group for Bible study. Those of you who mentioned your interest - please let me know what times work for you. We just need to coordinate a launch day and time. Here are a few options: Wednesdays at 9:30 am? Wednesdays at 3:30
pm? Thursday nights at 7 pm? There are many ways of studying together, and what we settle on will depend on the interests of the group.

Flood Relief Efforts
for Kerala, India
|
|
I have a colleague who lives and works in India. He is a pastor in our global church, and I got to know him a little better at our Clergy Meetings in Bryn Athyn, PA in June. His name is Peter Devassy, and he is in the middle of the flooding crisis in the Indian state of
Kerala. If you want to learn more about efforts to help people there, here is a page on our sister church's site The Glenview New Church http://glenviewnewchurch.org/news_items/flood-relief-for-india/ There you will find links to various other pages that give more information and ways to contribute financially to help with relief efforts.

Sunrise Chapel Needs Summertime Donations
|
|
Please consider Sunrise Chapel in your charitable giving this month. Your dedication and support throughout the year is
invaluable. However, with folks going and coming on vacations, summertime is typically a time of lower attendance at church activities, which is often reflected in decreased donations. Have you considered setting up a regular, automatic donation to the Chapel's general operating
budget?
The PayPal button here as an option for one-time or monthly donation. If you write a check, make it to Sunrise Chapel.
Thank you from our Treasurer, Bill Smith

A Prayer of David
Psalm 141:1-4, 8 I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening
sacrifice. Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies… But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge.
Jesus
Prays
Luke 3:21,22 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
What Does Prayer
Involve?
Secrets of Heaven 2535 Regarded in itself, praying is talking with God, while taking an inward view of the things we are praying about. In answer we receive a similar stream of speech into the perceptions or thoughts of our mind, so that our inner depths open up to God, in a way. The experience varies, depending on our mood and the nature of the subject we are praying about. If we pray from love and faith and
focus on or seek only what is heavenly and spiritual, something resembling a revelation emerges while we pray. It discloses itself in our emotions in the form of hope, comfort, or an inward stirring of joy. That is why praying, in an inner sense, means experiencing revelation—particularly when a prophet is being said to pray; the prophet means the Lord. When the Lord prayed, he was simply talking inwardly to his divine aspect and experiencing a revelation. Luke makes it clear that
revelation was involved: It happened, when Jesus was being baptized and praying, that heaven opened. (Luke 3:21) In the same author: It happened, when Jesus (taking Peter, James, and John) went up into the mountain to pray; when he prayed, the appearance of his face became different and his garment became dazzling white. (Luke 9:28, 29) In John, when he prayed, saying: “Father, make your name glorious.” A voice then went out from heaven: “I both have made it glorious and will
again make it glorious.” (John 12:27, 28) Clearly when the Lord was praying here, he was talking with his divine aspect and there was then a revelation.
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
