The Blessings and Challenges of Comparing our Lives with the Lives of Others It's very easy and common to evaluate life in comparison with others. Sometimes we can be genuinely relieved that we are not suffering as other people are, and we simply wish them well getting through their difficulty. Other
times, comparing comes with the disadvantage of feeling either superior or inferior to others. This is a dynamic that is illustrated in the story of Cain and Abel, and it doesn't end well. Jesus also calls it out it in a parable about a Pharisee and a tax collector. (See both stories below.)
This Sunday let's get some perspective on this common human experience. NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER - When Lauren A is unavailable because of her face painting gigs, Lissette G will teach the children during Sunday School. We look forward to having her on board and helping! If you have any questions, please contact Elise Gladish, our Sunday School Coordinator.
New
Children's Talk Series - the Biblical story of the Prophet Elijah For 7 Sundays of Children's Talks, we are studying the life of the prophet Elijah. The first one was about him being fed in the wilderness in a miraculous way. Then we learned about him being fed by a widow in a different miraculous way. This Sunday will focus on another miraculous event - the healing of a widow's young
son.
Speaking of Children - TEEN TIME!!Most Friday afternoons from about 5:30-6:00 pm at the church, led by yours truly. Casual. Thoughtful. Fun. Contact Rachael Casto or me if interested. Ongoing Service Project - Helping The Tucson Wildlife Center

GIVING OF OURSELVES TO OUR COMMUNITY "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’" Acts 20:35 (NIV)
Our
“Serve More People Team” has met several times discussing ways we and our church can serve others not only in our church, but also in our community. What better way to empower ourselves and show our love than to reach out to one of our neighbors, The Tucson Wildlife Center.
The Tucson Wildlife Center, located at almost the farthest East you can go on Speedway, is dedicated to the rescue, emergency medical care, and rehabilitation
of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife before return to the wild, while promoting education, habitat protection and peaceful coexistence with wildlife. They are Southern Arizona’s only state-of-the-art wildlife hospital running 24/7, 365 days a year, taking in nearly 3,500 animals a year, with operating costs approaching $1,000 a day for the medical treatment, care, feeding, and rehabilitation of native wildlife before they are ready to be returned to the wild.
There are many ways to help them through monetary donations, buying a "Dedication Brick", leaving a legacy, volunteering, etc. However, our church is doing something a little unique...
For the next few weeks, we are throwing a “shower” to help provide ongoing needed supplies from their “Wish List”. These wish
lists can be found in the church lobby... You can pick up an item on your next trip(s) to the grocery store. Pick up as much as you can of whatever you can and bring your items each week to church, depositing them in the boxes provided in the lobby.
If you have any questions, please contact Darleen Raulerson

Our next planning meeting is this Sunday, September 23 after lunch. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend and join the fun.
Also,
Gail B wants everyone to know that she is really counting on others to participate in soliciting donations from businesses. ANYONE CAN DO IT! This Sunday let's discuss more tips for how to do this effectively. The more donations, the more fun, and the more potential for funds!
It is helpful to take a copy of the “official” letter from the Pastor with you, and leave it with the
appropriate person at the place of business. Copies of the letter and envelopes are on a table in the Chapel front lobby.
The idea of this gala is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal,
entertainment, and an auction of goods and services that a broad audience will bid on. This kind of event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration
and lots of planning to pull it off. Put a big star on your calendar for Friday February 8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

I have really enjoyed these first two opportunities to study the Bible in a small group setting. And I'm committing to continuing on a weekly basis. I am trying different methods, and what we settle on will depend on the interests of the group. Anyone welcome. We meet in the small room off the lobby of the main Chapel. Cain and Abel Genesis 4:1-8
(This translation is from the New Century Edition of Secrets of Heaven) And Adam knew Eve, his wife, and she conceived and delivered Cain. And she said, “I have acquired a man: Jehovah.” And she went on to deliver his brother Abel;
and Abel was a shepherd of the flock, and Cain was one who cultivated the ground. And it happened at the end of some days that Cain brought forward some of the fruit of the ground as an offering to Jehovah. And Abel, too, brought forward some of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And Jehovah looked on Abel and on his offering. But Cain and his offering he ignored. And anger kindled strongly in Cain, and his face fell. And Jehovah said to Cain, “Why has anger kindled in you?
And why has your face fallen? If you do well, will it not raise you up? And if you do not do well, sin lies at your door. And he longs for you, but you rule him.” And it happened when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
A Parable of a Pharisee and a Tax Collector Luke 18:9-14 To some who were confident of
their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
The Inner Meaning of the Story of Cain and Abel Secrets of Heaven 361ff It is a characteristic of human thought that when we turn our attention to
one consideration, we make it more important than another, especially if our fantasies claim it as our own personal discovery. When selfish love and love for worldly advantages inflate our pride, no circumstance fails to add its consent and support, until we are almost ready to swear that it is true, even if it is false. So it (the story) says first, if you do well, it will raise you up, meaning if you wish well, charity can be present. In the inner sense, doing well means willing
well, because good deeds flow from goodwill. The second phrase (in the story) was if you do not do well, sin lies at your door, meaning if you do not wish well, there is no charity, but only evil. When sin lies at the door it is an evil near at hand and eager to get in. When charity is missing, after all, ruthlessness and hatred and therefore every kind of evil are present.
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
