What happens when you give advice? I find it interesting to explore the ins and outs of giving advice. Being a professional speaker, teacher, and counselor, there is an expectation that I give some advice, but I really have no control over how it is received, accepted, or implemented! Many spouses
know that it can be "dangerous" to give their partners uninvited advice. Parents of teenagers can struggle with what advice to give their children, especially when they are exploring their independence. Doctors, lawyers, and paid consultants do their best to provide advice. And how much do you rely on all the reviews these days on social media? It can be a big job just to evaluate all the advice that is dispensed! Well, this Sunday, let's
consider some of the things going on internally in our minds and hearts when we consider giving out advice. What are some guidelines the Lord provides through His Word?
Thank you for
reading this weekly email! This weekly email is the main source of information on WHAT'S UP at Sunrise Chapel. Thank you for reading it. There are a lot of things coming up and going on, and this is one of the main ways to get the information "out there" to you. This email also shows up on Sunrise Chapel's Facebook page. If you want to ensure that it
pops up on your timeline, give the post a "thumbs up" or better yet, make a comment! The more interaction, the better for reaching a wider audience!
Last Friday's successful "Authors and Artists" eventThank you to everyone who participated as authors and artists! We had about 50 people attend
for a lovely evening of book signing, browsing, and education.
Thank you from Johanna Von Mayr
Last Sunday's Celebration of Life for Steve Hildebrandt, Johanna's son, went very smoothly. In all, about 160 people participated. The Chapel was at capacity, and
others participated in the small room off the lobby as well as in Friendship Hall. The reception in Friendship Hall was alive with the hum of conversation and people enjoying a delicious meal, much of which was expertly grilled just outside, in spite of the rain!
In Johanna's words, "I felt very much supported and loved by all the help from so many people from Sunrise Chapel. Thank you so much. I want to thank everyone, but
I know I'll miss someone, so please know that whatever you did to help, I sincerely appreciate it!"
In fact, at least 23 Sunrise Chapel folks helped make this celebration of life go smoothly! That represents a lot of help! I'm proud of all our Sunrise Chapel volunteers! What good work you do!!
Semi-Annual Church Meeting - this
Sunday, October 14, 2018 Every Fall, we have an organizational meeting of our membership. It is our "Semi-Annual Meeting" in order to update everyone on various aspects of the church program and finances. This time we will NOT meet DURING the luncheon. Instead, we will hold the meeting immediately following the luncheon. All members and friends are welcome and invited. I will lead the meeting with careful efforts to keep it to one
hour, max.
Current Children's Talk Series - the Biblical story of the Prophet Elijah We are continuing to study the life of the prophet Elijah, one of the most famous and powerful prophets in the Biblical books of Kings. It's good for the children to get
an introduction to his story.
Speaking of Children - TEEN TIME!! Most Friday afternoons from about 5:15-5:45 pm at the church, led by yours truly. Casual. We are starting a little earlier in order to allow enough sunlight for the volunteer time afterwards. Thoughtful. Fun.
Contact Rachael Casto or me if interested.
Friday afternoon Volunteer Clean-up time During and after the teen discussion time, Rachel Casto invites anyone to join her and her family to help with clean-up on the property until dark (about an hour). There are lots of outdoor tasks including
weeding, trimming, hula hoeing, raking, watering. There are also many indoor tasks to choose from. It's a fun way of doing some things together for a short period of time on a regular basis. THANK YOU to Rachel and her family for many, many hours of volunteer service. The property looks happier because of your loving attention to detail.
MORE ACTIVITIES COMING
UP! See below for the Halloween party next Friday, Oct. 19, and the Eduardo Costa Concert next Sunday, Oct. 21. Thinking of you all with love and respect,
Nathan

Ongoing Service Project - Helping The Tucson Wildlife Center
|
|
DEADLINE: THIS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14
Giving of ourselves to our community "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It
is more blessed to give than to receive.’" Acts 20:35 (NIV)
Our “Serve More People Team” has met several times discussing ways we and our church can serve others not only in our church, but also in our community. What better way to empower ourselves and show our love than to reach out to one of our neighbors, The Tucson Wildlife Center.
The Tucson Wildlife
Center, located at almost the farthest East you can go on Speedway, is dedicated to the rescue, emergency medical care, and rehabilitation of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife before return to the wild, while promoting education, habitat protection and peaceful coexistence with wildlife. They are Southern Arizona’s only state-of-the-art wildlife hospital running 24/7, 365 days a year, taking in nearly 3,500 animals a year, with operating costs approaching $1,000 a day for the medical
treatment, care, feeding, and rehabilitation of native wildlife before they are ready to be returned to the wild.
There are many ways to help them through monetary donations, buying a "Dedication Brick", leaving a legacy, volunteering, etc. However, our church is doing something a little unique...
FINAL
CALL: Our collection time for this event will close this Sunday, October 14. If you want to help provide ongoing needed supplies from their “Wish List” look for a copy of the list in the church lobby... You can pick up an item on your next trip(s) to the grocery store. Pick up as much as you can of whatever you can and bring your items each week to church, depositing them in the boxes provided in the lobby.
If you have any questions, please contact Darleen Raulerson

Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
Location: La Mariposa Activity: Dinner + Dancing + Auction fundraising
event!
NEW INFO: Next Planning Meeting on November 4 after lunch
Also, Gail B wants everyone to know that she is really counting on others to participate in soliciting donations from businesses. ANYONE CAN DO
IT! This Sunday let's discuss more tips for how to do this effectively. The more donations, the more fun, and the more potential for funds!
It is helpful to take a copy of the “official” letter from the Pastor with you, and leave it with the appropriate person at the place of business. Copies of the letter and envelopes are on a table in the Chapel front
lobby.
The idea of this gala is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal, entertainment, and an auction of goods and services that a broad audience will bid on. This kind of
event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration and lots of planning to pull it off. Put a big star on your calendar for Friday February 8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Getting Conflicting Advice 1 Kings 12:1-15 (parts) Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king... and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.” Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had
served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked. They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.” But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your
father put on us’?” The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier.’” Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, he followed the advice of the young men... So the king did not listen to the people. Jesus Gives Advice from Luke 12 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
The Lord’s Method of Giving Advice Secrets of Heaven §5952 The Lord does not openly teach anyone truths but leads each person by means of good to think what the truth is, and also imparts to the person, though the person is not aware of it, a discernment and consequent adoption of a thing as being true because the Word declares it to be so, and because it squares with the Word. Thus the Lord adapts truths to accord with the individual's
acceptance of good. This is done by Him in accordance with each person's affection, thus in freedom.
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
