What does the Lord's voice sound like? The Bible answers this question in a variety of ways. In Psalm 29 (below), the voice of the Lord is described as "powerful," "majestic." It is said to "thunder," "strike," "shake," and "twist." In that case, David is writing about God long before anyone knew about Jesus Christ.
Later, in the Gospels, we actually hear the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ in the words that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John recorded.
But in what ways can we personally hear God's voice? This Sunday, we'll explore the story of the prophet Elijah listening for a message from God while standing at the mouth of a cave on the mountain of God. TONIGHT "Authors and Artists" event - Friday, Oct. 5 @ 6:30 pm See below for a beautiful invitation created by Sammie A! Friendship Hall is set and we are looking forward to welcoming people for this special event.
Doors open at 6:30.
Authors and artists will speak about their work starting at 7 pm.
Memorial Celebration of Life for Steve Hildebrandt - this Sunday, Oct. 7 @ 3 PM All are invited and welcome to attend this service for Johanna's son who
passed unexpectedly. A catered dinner will be served afterwards in Friendship Hall. Everyone welcome.
Semi-Annual Church Meeting - Sunday, October 14, 2018 Every Fall, we have an organizational meeting of our membership. It is our "Semi-Annual Meeting" in order to update everyone on
various aspects of the church program and finances. This time we will NOT meet DURING the luncheon. Instead, we will hold the meeting immediately following the luncheon on Sunday, October 14. All members and friends are welcome and invited. I will lead the meeting with careful efforts to keep it to one hour, max.
Current
Children's Talk Series - the Biblical story of the Prophet Elijah For 7 Sundays of Children's Talks, we are studying the life of the prophet Elijah. Elijah is one of the most famous and powerful prophets in the Biblical books of Kings. It's good for the children to get an introduction to his story.
Speaking of Children - TEEN TIME!!Most Friday afternoons from about 5:30-6:00 pm at the church, led by yours truly. Casual. Thoughtful. Fun. Contact Rachael Casto or me if interested.
Friday afternoon Volunteer Clean-up time During and after the teen discussion time, Rachel Casto invites anyone to join her and her family to help with clean-up on the property until dark (about an hour). There are lots of outdoor tasks including weeding, trimming, hula hoeing, raking, watering. There are also many indoor tasks to choose
from. It's a fun way of doing some things together for a short period of time on a regular basis. THANK YOU to Rachel and her family for many, many hours of volunteer service. The property looks happier because of your loving attention to detail.
NEW start
time routine for Sunday Luncheons Our dedicated volunteers in our kitchen request that you wait to serve yourself lunch until after the kitchen bell is rung and someone (any volunteer) asks a blessing. Please mingle and help yourself to a beverage as the final preparations are made. Thank you for your cooperation! And thank you to everyone who helps with clean up, too! Thinking of you all with love and respect,
Nathan

Ongoing Service Project - Helping The Tucson Wildlife Center
|
|
DEADLINE: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14
Giving of ourselves to our community "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of
hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’" Acts 20:35 (NIV)
Our “Serve More People Team” has met several times discussing ways we and our church can serve others not only in our church, but also in our community. What better way to empower ourselves and show our love than to reach out to one of our neighbors, The Tucson Wildlife
Center.
The Tucson Wildlife Center, located at almost the farthest East you can go on Speedway, is dedicated to the rescue, emergency medical care, and rehabilitation of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife before return to the wild, while promoting education, habitat protection and peaceful coexistence with wildlife. They are Southern Arizona’s only state-of-the-art wildlife hospital running 24/7, 365 days a year, taking in nearly
3,500 animals a year, with operating costs approaching $1,000 a day for the medical treatment, care, feeding, and rehabilitation of native wildlife before they are ready to be returned to the wild.
There are many ways to help them through monetary donations, buying a "Dedication Brick", leaving a legacy, volunteering, etc. However, our church is doing something a little unique...
NEW INFO:
Our collection time for this event will be open for two more weeks, until October 14. If you want to help provide ongoing needed supplies from their “Wish List” look for a copy of the list in the church lobby...
You can pick up an item on your next trip(s) to the grocery store. Pick up as much as you can of whatever you can and bring your items each week to church, depositing them in the boxes provided in the lobby.
If you have any questions, please contact Darleen Raulerson

Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
Location: La Mariposa Activity: Dinner + Dancing + Auction fundraising
event!
NEW INFO: "Master List" I have volunteered to be the "list keeper" for all the goods and services that businesses and individuals are donating for the fundraiser. If you want to see the whole list, just ask me. If you have something to add to the list, please give me the details so I can
keep the list current and up-to-date. Thank you! ~Nathan
Also, Gail B wants everyone to know that she is really counting on others to participate in soliciting donations from businesses. ANYONE CAN DO IT! This Sunday let's discuss more tips for how to do this effectively. The more donations, the more fun, and the
more potential for funds!
It is helpful to take a copy of the “official” letter from the Pastor with you, and leave it with the appropriate person at the place of business. Copies of the letter and envelopes are on a table in the Chapel front lobby.
The idea of this
gala is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal, entertainment, and an auction of goods and services that a broad audience will bid on. This kind of event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and
others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration and lots of planning to pull it off. Put a big star on your calendar for Friday February
8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Readings for
this Sunday's church service

The Voice of the LORD Psalm 29 Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory
thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. The voice of the
LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!” The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
The Voice of the Good Shepherd John 10:1-6 Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
Hearing the Lord’s Voice Apocalypse Revealed
218 Jesus said, "'If anyone hears My voice and opens the door'..." (Rev. 3:20). This symbolically means anyone who believes the Word and lives according to it. To hear His voice is to believe the Word, for the Word's Divine truth is the voice of Jehovah. And to open the door is to live according to the Word, since one opens the door and receives the Lord not only by hearing His voice, but by living according to it. For the Lord says, “Whoever has My commandments and keeps them...,
I will...manifest Myself to them. (John 14:21-24)
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
