It was actually hard to find a suitable photo for this topic This graphic is the best I could do. It's from www.freebibleimages.com, which is a resource I use a lot, but I generally use photos rather than drawings. This depicts the disciples afraid they are seeing a ghost, when it really turns out to be Jesus
walking toward them to offer help and comfort during a violent storm. There are a couple of other Bible stories about ghosts or spirits, and of course many about angels. But a careful look into each story reveals some surprising truths about the nature of the spiritual world and its connection with our physical world. Let's explore this topic in a way that not only relates to Halloween,
but also to a more general sense of ghosts in our inner lives.
Coming up in November We have a lot of activities to look forward to! * A visit from our Regional Pastor, David Lindrooth - November 3 & 4 (see
below) * Holy Supper on November 4 * Sunday morning Bible Study led by Michael Brown - each Sunday in November * Preparations for our annual Path to Bethlehem - the first Saturday in December * A new service project being organized by Darleen R to support a local organization that
helps "Teens on Their Own" Another opportunity to volunteer This week, Lex Waddell started learning about the urgent need of many refugees from Central America seeking asylum in our city and other places throughout the state and the nation. He feels called to help
in some way, and invites anyone else to join in the efforts. Yesterday I circulated a letter from Lex with details of the needs, various ways to help, and his contact information. Please reach out to him if you want to learn more about this opportunity. (His contact info is also in our church directory.)
Thinking of you all with love and respect,
Nathan

Welcome back our Regional Pastor, David Lindrooth

|
November 3 & 4 David Lindrooth will visit and preach the weekend of November 3 & 4. Saturday Nov. 3 and Sunday
Nov. 4 are days you could meet with David individually or in a group to discuss anything about the state of the church locally or globally. David is the Director of Outreach for our global church. In this capacity he travels the world and supports many pastors and congregations. Recently he had a very positive visit to our congregation in Kenya, Africa. Just after that
he was in Portland, OR. He tries to visit Sunrise Chapel twice a year, since he is our Regional Pastor. And he has a special love for Sunrise Chapel having been an assistant pastor for several years back in the 1990s. Part of the purpose of this visit is to conduct my annual professional development review. So, the more input he receives from you, the better. To set up a visit or just to connect with David, email him at david.lindrooth@newchurch.org or call/text him at 215-514-0388

Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
Location: La Mariposa Activity: Dinner + Dancing + Auction fundraising
event!
NEW INFO: Next Planning Meeting on November 4 after lunch
Also, Gail B wants everyone to know that she is really counting on others to participate in soliciting donations from businesses. ANYONE CAN DO
IT! This Sunday let's discuss more tips for how to do this effectively. The more donations, the more fun, and the more potential for funds!
It is helpful to take a copy of the “official” letter from the Pastor with you, and leave it with the appropriate person at the place of business. Copies of the letter and envelopes are on a table in the Chapel front
lobby.
The idea of this gala is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal, entertainment, and an auction of goods and services that a broad audience will bid on. This kind of
event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration and lots of planning to pull it off. Put a big star on your calendar for Friday February 8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Readings for
this Sunday's church service

Saul Sees the Ghost of Samuel 1 Samuel 28: 3-14 Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land. The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at
Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said. So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name...” Then
the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” “Bring up Samuel,” he said. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice... The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?” The woman said, “I see a ghostly figure coming up out of the earth.” “What does he look like?” he asked. “An old man wearing a robe is coming up,” she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the
ground. The Disciples Think They See a Ghost
Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted
by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But
when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
A Common Opinion about
Ghosts True Christianity §29 The general opinion on the state of souls after death, as well as of angels and spirits, is that they have no extension - they are not in space or time. This has led to the saying about souls after death that they are in limbo, and that spirits and angels are ghosts, which are thought of as ether, air, breath, or wind. In fact, souls after death are substantial people who live
together like people in the physical world, only with units of space and time that are determined by their states of mind... Angels live among each other with clear and distinct boundaries, in fact with even clearer boundaries than people on earth do.
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it."
