This Sunday is the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day
|
|
What is now known as Veterans Day used to be called Armistice Day. Back on November 11, 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between Germany and the Allied nations leading to the end of the First World War. Later, in May 1938, November 11 became a legal federal holiday, “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as Armistice
Day." But after even more wars, the day was renamed Veterans Day, and November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. For me, not only is it a time to appreciate veterans for their honorable service, but it is especially a time to reflect on healthy peacemaking and peacekeeping. And in the context of our spiritual lives, that means learning more about how to work toward experiencing heavenly peace. For some insights from the
Word, scroll all the way to the end of this email. Let's explore this together this Sunday!
Lots more coming up and going on - see below for details!
Thinking of you all with love and respect, Nathan

Financial Support Needed for our Annual Path to
Bethlehem
|
|
Thank you for your help! It takes a lot of volunteers and cookie donations to offer our Path to Bethlehem as a gift to our Tucson community. And it also takes financial support. Our total cost to put on this even each year is about
$800, and we don't rely on guests contributing. It is our "Christmas greeting" to our friends and neighbors.
Thank you in advance to those who are able to help with monetary donations! If you feel called to give to this cause, please add a memo so our treasurer knows your donation is for the Path to
Bethlehem. * Sponsor our shepherd, Beryl, and one sheep for $60 or all four sheep for $240 * Donate toward Christmas decorations for the Chapel - up to $200 * Help us improve our event sets, lighting, and sound equipment - up to $150 * Safety "event signage" on Wrightstown Road - $40 * Pizza supper for all volunteers just before the show - up to $150

Let's Look at Luke Wednesdays at 1 pm We are enjoying our amble through the Gospel of Luke, and we welcome you to join the study. It's amazing how much there is to talk about in just a couple of
verses! The Bible is the most important and fascinating book in the world. Right now we are reading and discussing together the Gospel of Luke. We will go at the group's pace, taking questions and comments as they come up. It's a study, not a lecture. Anyone
welcome. We meet in the small room off the lobby of the main Chapel. Bring a Bible, bring a friend. ~Nathan

Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
Location: La Mariposa Activity: Dinner + Dancing + Auction fundraising
event!
NEW INFORMATION: Thank you to everyone who is working towards making this event fun, special, and worthwhile. The most recent planning meeting, held last Sunday, November 4, focused on setting a ticket price for the evening. And now our artistic Sammie is crafting a beautiful and
informative invitation to be distributed beginning Sunday, November 18.
The idea of this event is to provide a fun, social evening, including a meal, entertainment, and an auction of goods and
services that a broad audience will bid on. This kind of event is not only fun, but it can also be morale-boosting as we work together on a common project. It can also be an opportunity to welcome friends and others who appreciate Sunrise Chapel. It will take collaboration and lots of planning to pull it
off. Put a big star on your calendar for Friday February 8, 2019. Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Readings for
this Sunday's church service on Working for Heavenly Peace
|
Psalm 120:6,7 A song of ascents Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war.
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called
children of God.
John 14:27 Jesus said to his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
James 3:18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest
of righteousness.
2 Corinthians 4:16 We do not lose heart. Even though the outward life is perishing, yet the inward is being renewed day by day.
Matthew 26:51-53 (NIV) One of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the
high priest, cutting off his ear. Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back in its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
True Christianity 304 Heavenly peace can be compared in many ways to earthly peace. For example, it can be compared to the
peace after wars when all are living in safety from their enemies, protected in their own city, in their house, with their own land and garden. It is as the prophet says, who speaks of heavenly peace in earthly language: They will each sit under their own vine and their own fig tree, no one will frighten them. (Micah 4:4; Isaiah 65:21, 22, 23) Heavenly peace can be compared to rest and recreation for the mind after working extremely hard, or to a mother’s consolation after
giving birth when her instinctive parental love unveils its pleasures. It can be compared to the serenity after storms, black clouds and thunder; or to the spring that follows a severe winter, with the uplifting effect of seedlings in the fields and blossoms in the gardens, meadows, and woods; or to the state of mind felt by survivors of storms or hostilities at sea who reach port and set their feet on longed-for solid ground.
