Week 3 - Confidence Over Arrogance
In this week's episode of the Biblical story of the Prophet Daniel, king Nebuchadnezzar gets hot and bothered at Daniel's friends for not following his rules. In spite of his burning desire to destroy them, he ends up celebrating their cool, calm, collected devotion to God that protects them even from the scorching heat of the fiery furnace.
We'll continue our study of LOVE OVER EGO this Sunday, moving into the contrast between confidence and arrogance.
SMALL GROUPS
Four small groups are going well! They are open groups in the sense that you are invited to join any of them anytime. See below for details on the schedules of the groups. THANK YOU to our leaders - Steve Gladish (Sunday morning), yours truly (Wednesday afternoon), Mike Villeburn (Wednesday night), Kelly Woofenden (Thursday night
Women's Group)
Our Fundraising Event on Friday, Feb. 8 - "Transformations"
WOW, we are moving forward toward a wonderful event. So many supportive donations have come in, both financial and 3-dimensional! The auction itself will be a lot of fun. Then there's the social time, the band, the dinner. It's going to be great!
Although the "soft" deadline for RSVPs was on the 15th of January, we continue to welcome your reply cards this week! We need to give the caterer a solid count next Sunday, February 3. It is good to have an idea how many to plan for, and the team is eager to accommodate more! Please let the team know your intentions.
More Planning for February Fundraiser After Church this Sunday
We've got a great team of volunteers helping this event run smoothly: before, during and after! There is still quite a list of things to do in preparation for this big event! Please come and consider how you can help make this event successful.
Date set for Arizona Mountain Camp this summer!
Well, how about this? After our successful trial run last summer at the Elks Youth Camp north of Globe, we have scheduled a time for this summer! Tuesday July 9 thru Sunday July 14. (The 9th will be "set up" day, and the 10th will be the first full day.) Thank you to Christine Morey and Linda Waddell for their energy and support of our beloved
camp!
With love and respect,

Weekly Topics:
Week 1: True Identity
Choosing to respond from our higher nature, rather than from ego.
Week 2: Intention Over Expectation
Coming to a situation with a desire to love and serve, rather than expecting to be served.
Week 3: Confidence Over Arrogance
Staying centered and present, even in highly charged situations.
Week 4: Humility Over Shame
Accepting that we are imperfect, and learning from our mistakes.
Week 5: Contentment Over Materialism
Appreciating this moment, instead of constantly seeking “more.”
Week 6: Love Wins (Wrap-up)
Navigating hard times with prayer, and belief that God’s love is the most powerful force.
The program workbook includes meditations, discussion questions, and daily readings to help participants bring the power of the story’s message into their own lives. Fundraising Gala Friday February 8, 2019
|
|
Location: La Mariposa
Activity: Dinner + Musical Entertainment + Auction fundraising event!
NEW INFORMATION:
Energy is building and a lot of details are being finalized! Thank you so much to everyone who has returned a response card. Keep them coming!
The first deadline for turning in RSVPs was January 15. Our next big deadline is February 3 when we tell the caterer how many people we expect to attend! We are certainly still accepting RSVPs, but the sooner we know of your
interest and how many to plan for, the better! Thank you for your love and support.
We are grateful to have over 70 items available for the auction! There are a variety of overnight experiences such as a luxury stays at the Westward Look Resort and Tubac Golf and Country Club. And there are many three-dimensional items like original art work by local artists, tickets to the theater, and handmade jewelry.
What will the money raised be used for? This is a fundraiser for Sunrise Chapel as a non profit with a unique purpose, mission, and values. Funds will be used to support the various ministries and needs. One of the original, primary motivations for this fundraiser was (and still is) to support the Kitchen Ministry and the Sunday luncheons. Beyond that, just think of the many things we do as a church to be able to serve
as many people as possible with the unique and inspiring message for cultivating spiritual growth and choosing heavenly joy. This is not just a platitude. My primary effort as pastor of this church community is to help us serve more people with the teachings of the New Church as they apply in our daily spiritual walk toward heaven. This is part of a vision that this fundraiser supports.
Friday February 8, 2019 is coming right up! Consider it a big "date night" or some special event with family and friends. It's gonna be great! ~Nathan

Daniel's Friends in the Fiery Furnace
from Daniel 3:1-27 (parts)
King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, and set it up in the province of Babylon. He then summoned all the provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. So they assembled, and they stood before it.
Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language, this is what you are commanded to do: As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace...”
At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews. They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “Your Majesty has issued a decree that... whoever does not fall down and worship your idol will be thrown into a blazing furnace. But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego—who pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”
Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up?...
They replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”
They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”
He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!”
So they came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
Spiritual Courage
Divine Providence §252
Good people have only care and passion for protecting, and rarely any care and passion for aggression.
It is much the same with spirits of hell and angels of heaven. Spirits of hell attack, and angels of heaven protect.
