The Disciples Walk to Emmaus

When Spirituality Makes Sense
The Bible isn’t just a confusing blend of stories, laws and ‘begats’ that reflect an ancient people and their past. The Bible is an external framework that supports inner, spiritual truths that explain who God is and His inner workings with the universe. Its truths offer great power for protection and healing.
When Jesus explained the Scriptures to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, He gives us clues for unlocking the power of the Word in our lives. We can use this power to see how the Lord constantly works behind the scenes to support us and our spiritual health.

A Beautiful Easter Weekend
Last weekend was a delight, beginning with a peaceful, reflective Good Friday evening service including a fresh experience of the Holy Supper.
Then the weather was cool and clear for our early outdoor service on Easter Sunday morning at 7 am. We held it for the first time at the entrance of our Memorial Garden.
The lively Easter Family Festival service at 11 am was well-attended with members and friends from near and far, including a whole bunch of children, who seemed to enjoy the Egg Hunt afterwards. A lot of socializing and community building took place afterwards and during the scrumptious covered dish Easter luncheon.
Our hearts were warmed by the blessings the Lord provided and by everyone’s help, support, and participation throughout the weekend!

Please Consider a Fiscal-Year-End Donation to Sunrise Chapel's General Fund
As the end of our fiscal year draws near (June 30), our treasurer, Bill, reports that we are in need of a little over $6,000 to meet our budgeted income for the year. Some of that will come from our two fundraisers in February and May, but if you are able to donate or pledge to increase your donation between now and June 30, please do! Sunrise Chapel needs your help.
If by some generous good fortune we happen to exceed the goal (which would be a very happy position!), the "extra" will be used in the general fund for the next fiscal year, beginning July 1. Thank you for your dedication and support of Sunrise Chapel's many uses.
With love and respect,

Luke 24:13-32
Now that same day two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.
He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
“What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen
a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
Divine Providence §189
People who have become spiritual by virtue of their recognition of God and have become wise by casting off their sense of self-importance see divine providence in the whole world and in every least part of it. They see it if they look at natural events, they see it if they look at civic events, they see it if they look at spiritual events, in the way things coincide and the way they follow in sequence, in purposes and means and results, in useful events, in forms, in things great and things
small. They see it especially in our salvation, in the fact that Jehovah gave us the Word that tells us about God, heaven, hell, and eternal life, and that he himself came into the world to redeem and save us. All this and much more, and the divine providence within it all, people see from spiritual light within earthly light.
