What do horses have to do with spiritual growth?
The Biblical Book of Revelation, also known as the Apocalypse, is a series of visions with great meaning. Many people see these visions as harbingers of terrible disasters in the world, but the spiritual meaning relates to our own individual spiritual lives and how the Lord can guide us to new states of wisdom and love.
This Sunday, we'll explore one of the visions - of four horses and their riders. In general, the symbolism of horses in the Bible has to do with aspects of human understanding. The Apostle, John's, vision of four horses shows four different viewpoints we can use to move toward any particular decision in our lives.
Virginia Osmus - Celebration of Life
See below for an announcement from the Osmus family about honoring our dear friend, Virginia, this coming Friday, June 28 at 4 pm at Sunrise Chapel. All welcome.
Live streaming experiments continue
Last Sunday's live stream had its ups and downs. The service itself was lovely with participation from a variety of members about their favorite hymns. Unfortunately, a mic was not working, so their words were not captured. But we will continue to fine-tune the system!
You can view this Sunday's stream on our You Tube channel, SunriseChapelLive. Try searching for it on You Tube, and then subscribe to receive updates. For the most part, the services will be archived on the same You Tube channel so that you can watch them later. Thank you
for your patience as we figure out this new feature.
Fundraising Success!
Good news! Thankfully, it is looking very good for Sunrise Chapel to balance this fiscal year's budget by Sunday, June 30! Congratulations to everyone who has donated either regularly or periodically. Our two special fundraisers in February and May were very important in reaching our goal this year. Thank you to everyone for your contributions of time, talent, and treasure.
Thanks also to our largest "contributor" -- our church headquarters in Bryn Athyn, PA, who continued to provide a huge financial donation to Sunrise Chapel's operating expenses. We must cover the difference between the grants we receive and all our expenses. All your donations to
our local General Fund make it possible to continue with our regular programs and activities.
You can make a PayPal donation anytime from our website page: sunrisechapel.org/donate/
Feel free to speak to Bill directly or any Board member for more information.
Thank you for your dedication and support of Sunrise Chapel's many uses.
Nature Talks, and so does Frank Rose!
Last Wednesday, Frank gave a slide presentation at Sunrise Chapel on water features of the Catalina Mountains. This coming Thursday, June 27 at 2:30 pm, he will be "on the road" up Mt Lemmon in Summerhaven, giving a talk called "Tree Wonders" in the visitor's center. All welcome. For details, contact Frank.
With love and respect,

Arizona Mountain
Camp - July 9-14
|
|
I hope this map comes through. We have a more detailed map, but this gives a general sense. The camp is east and a bit northeast of Phoenix. If you can make out Lake Roosevelt, it's about 45 minutes up the mountain, northeast of the
Lake.
This camp has good creature-comforts for all ages, and it is very affordable. There will also be some financial assistance for those who need it. We don’t want money to keep anyone away.
SCHEDULE: The first full day of camp will be Wednesday, July 10 and the final day will be Sunday, July 14. (Tuesday, July 9 will be the set-up day.)
The site is owned and managed by the Arizona Elks Lodge to benefit children. Last year was our first time there, and people loved it.
Anyone is invited to be part of the planning team. Linda Waddell and Christine Morey have once again offered to organize meal planning and preparation. Yay!
There will be opportunities for worship, small groups, and plenty of down time to enjoy friendships in the peace and quiet of this lovely mountain forest.
We expect to welcome friends from our sister church in Phoenix this year!

The Four Horses of the Apocalypse
Revelation 6:1-8
I, John, watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come and see!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come and see!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius and do not harm the oil and the wine!”
When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come and see!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
The Symbolism of Horses
Secrets of Heaven (parts of §6534, 2761, 8265) (Swedenborg)
In prophetical parts of the Bible, “a horse” and “a rider” are referred to many times. “A horse” means the understanding part of the human mind, and “a rider” one who has intelligence. In the contrary sense, a horse means a perverted understanding, which is no understanding at all, and therefore falsity.
Secrets of Heaven (§2762)
The meaning of “a horse” as the understanding part of the mind dates back to ancient Greece. When describing the sun, which meant love, they placed the god of their wisdom and intelligence there in the sun, and gave him a chariot and four fiery horses. And when they described the god of the sea—the sea meaning knowledge in general—they gave horses to him also. And when they described the upsurge of knowledge from the understanding, they portrayed it as a flying horse which with its hoof broke
open a fountain where the virgins who were the branches of knowledge dwelt. And by the Trojan Horse nothing else was meant than a device of their understanding for destroying city walls.
