I believe the Lord wants us to find joy in all sorts of places
I'm sending this weekly email a little early since I will be "unplugged" for a few days while at Arizona Mountain Camp - discussing joy!
This week, folks who attend our Arizona Mountain Camp will be talking about "finding joy." This implies looking for it, or at least being open to noticing it when it shows up.
The word "joy" seems like a pretty exceptional experience, but the Lord clearly says he wants us to have it, and he wants us to experience it fully - which I take to mean all the time! “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full." John 15:11
Our topics for discussion at camp will include finding joy in beginnings and in endings, in humility and in significance, in transformations and in hardships.
This Sunday I'll bring some of our "findings" to the church service at the Chapel. Although I will be at camp starting Wednesday, I'll return Saturday and conduct our regular service as usual on Sunday.
Our Deep Condolences
A dear friend and former Sunrise Chapel participant, Arleen Andrews, passed on to the spiritual world on July 2. Several years ago she moved from Tucson to Florida to be in the care of her daughter-in-law, Linda. She had celebrated her 99th birthday last October! Her health only started to decline at Christmas time with bouts of pneumonia which took her to the hospital several times in the ensuing months.
There will be a memorial service for her in her Michigan home town.
Billie Baty's sister, Darleen, passed on to the spiritual world on Wednesday, July 3. She had suffered with COPD and was struggling to get better for about a month. Although she lived for many years in New Jersey, when she came to visit her dear sister, Billie, in Tucson, Sunrise Chapel was her church. A celebration of her life is being held on Thursday, July 11 in New Jersey.
Arizona Mountain Camp is this week!
Our awesome head cook and kitchen organizer, Linda, and her equally amazing sister, Margo, have been busily working behind the scenes to provide for delicious meals for all. Linda and Tom, Christine and her kids and a few other helpers went up to the Youth Camp on Tuesday to set up and prepare. All other campers are scheduled to come up on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. All together we are expecting
about 35-40 men, women, and children at some point. It's gonna be great!
See below for more details.
Making a little more progress with our live streaming
This past Sunday, Dave Synnestvedt and his son Garrison were able to help "mix" the sound for the live stream during the service, which made for a more balanced audio experience. Thank you!
We are continuing to explore this technology. As we climb the learning curve, please be patient and stay tuned. The biggest challenge is learning the ins and outs of the various bits of software and developing a system that volunteers can manage. We have a good camera that has been working very well for months, but we are still sorting out the best system for connecting the
camera and the sound to our YouTube channel.
You can view this Sunday's stream on our You Tube channel, SunriseChapelLive. Try searching for it on You Tube, and then subscribe to receive updates. For the most part, the services will be archived on the same You Tube channel so that you can watch them later. Please let
me know if you are using the feature and send me any feedback or questions.
I love Tucson summers, especially the monsoon season. I hope you can enjoy the cloudscapes and the occasional rain that refreshes the desert and revives our souls.
With love and respect,

Here is a photo looking from the parking area to the dining hall on the left and the bathrooms on the right.
Since last year, solar panels have been installed, which allows us to have lights on anytime, and reduces the need for the generators. Yay! The camp also has a brand new freezer, which will make the cooks (and the diners) very happy!
We have a detailed map. The camp is high in the mountains a bit northeast of Phoenix. If you know where Roosevelt Lake is, the camp is about 45 minutes up the mountain, northeast of the Lake. There is an active wildfire to the south and west of Roosevelt Lake, but it doesn't affect our camp. However, since it is
so dry in the area, there will be no campfires allowed.
The registration forms and other information are available at the church. Let me (Nathan) know if you want me to email you copies.
This camp has good creature-comforts for all ages, and it is very affordable. There will also be some financial assistance for those who need it. We don’t want money to keep anyone away.
SCHEDULE: The first full day of camp will be Wednesday, July 10 and the final day will be Sunday, July 14. (Tuesday, July 9 will be the set-up day.)
The site is owned and managed by the Arizona Elks Lodge to benefit children. Last year was our first time there, and people loved it.
There will be opportunities for worship, small groups, and plenty of down time to enjoy friendships in the peace and quiet of this lovely mountain forest.
We expect to welcome friends from our sister church in Phoenix this year!

God’s Joy
Psalm 16:1-2, 7-11
Keep me safe, my God,
for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.”
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Joy in the Lord
John 15:11-17
Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known
to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another."
The Source of Joy
Revelation Unveiled §812
‘Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come.’ (Rev. 19:7) This symbolizes the angels' joy of soul and heart and consequent glorification of the Lord, that from now on a full marriage of the Lord with the church is possible.
To be glad and rejoice symbolizes a joy of soul and heart. Joy of the soul is a joy of the intellect or joy in response to truths of faith, and joy of the heart is a joy of the will or joy springing from goods of love. Both of these are mentioned because of the marriage of truth and goodness in every particular of the Word.”
