What does it mean to be adequate?
Last Sunday's service focused on finding joy from the inside out. As God said to the prophet Samuel, "the Lord does not see as people see; for people look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Sam. 16:7) Even when we're not outwardly joyful, there is a possibility of digging deep to uncover joy that transcends the ups and downs of daily life. The Lord knows it's there. He sees our
hearts.
This Sunday, I'm going to keep this series going on Finding Joy and wrestle with the illusion of not being good enough, or being inadequate. This is a very common human condition. For some, it may only be a temporary, passing challenge. For many it is an attitude from a childhood wound that takes effort and attention to heal. One question is, what does the Lord want us to believe -
that we are adequate or inadequate in His estimation? And then depending on the answer, what spiritual growth task can we work on?
This ongoing sermon series
The word "joy" seems like a pretty exceptional experience, but the Lord clearly says he wants us to experience it fully - which I take to mean all the time. A tall goal, for sure. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full." John 15:11
Last Sunday's Live Streaming hiccups
We had technical difficulties last Sunday morning, which were somewhat overcome at the 11th hour, literally. However, what we didn't know was that our WiFi router in the chapel was failing. The result was that the router lost internet connection twice during the service, which chopped up the video into three segments. That router has been replaced! We should be back to normal this Sunday.

Manna from the Sky
Exodus 1:4, 17-18
Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day...
The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
What, Me Worry?
Matthew 6:25-end
Jesus said, “Don’t worry for your soul, what you are to eat or drink, or for your body, what you are to put on. Why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: they do not toil or spin thread. So do not worry, saying, “What will we eat and what will we drink?” or “What will we put on?” because the surrounding nations seek all of those. Doesn’t your heavenly Father know that you need all these? Seek the kingdom of the heavens and its justice first, then all these will
be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will take care of its own affairs."
Angels Don’t Worry
Secrets of Heaven §2493
Talking with angels about the memory of the past and resulting worries about the future, I (Swedenborg) learned that the deeper and more perfect angels are, the less they care about the past or think about the future. That is why they are happy. From moment to moment, they said, the Lord shows them what to think and supplies them with blessings and happiness, so that they are free of worries and cares. This is what is meant in
an inner sense by receiving manna from the sky daily [Exodus 16:4, 19–21], by the daily ration of bread mentioned in the Lord’s Prayer [Matthew 6:11; Luke 11:3], and by being forbidden to worry about what we will eat or drink or how we will be clothed [Matthew 6:31].
Even though angels do not care about the past or worry about the future, though, they still have a complete and perfect memory of the past and ability to see into the future, because for them the entire present moment holds both the past and the future. So they have a more perfect memory than could ever be imagined or expressed.
