Sunday topics
Last Sunday, I enjoyed delving into a harbor metaphor and posing the question, "what do we harbor, and what do we NOT want to harbor?" The task focused on identifying the negative emotions and thoughts that float into our minds and hearts and threaten to make us founder like vessels about to sink. The goal is to find joy in harboring the perceptions and emotions that the Lord sends us, like the
angels do.
Guest Preacher, Frank Rose
This Sunday, please welcome guest preacher, the Rev. Frank Rose. He will talking about life's challenges and what good might come of them. In his words, "Life is difficult and full of challenges. Some of these challenges get harder as we grow older. And, strange as it may sound, they can all contribute to our long term happiness."
Oops, last week's livestream sound didn't work
The camera was fine, but there was no sound! After the service I figured out that a certain wire in the sound booth got accidentally disconnected, which completely turned off the sound to our two TVs as well as to our livestream. It has been reconnected and firmly taped so as not to happen again, thank you very much!
And once again, THANK YOU to everyone for your patience as we continue to learn how to improve the sound system with its various components and features. When it works, it's great!
From time to time in the past we have used name tags during the luncheon time to help us all get to know each other better. We have not had a name tag coordinator for some time. But in the spirit of helping everyone learn each others' names and encouraging friendship, I heartily invite someone or several people to take on this volunteer role. I think of it as a ministry that can be very rewarding. If you would
like to volunteer, please speak to me or Elise. We will support you with supplies and encouragement.
"New Church 101" Small Group Starting on Wednesday, Oct. 9
A few people have expressed interest in a small group to discuss the basics of our church - the unique teachings, the history, and the current "state of the union." We are looking at meeting on Wednesdays in the early to mid afternoon. If you are interested, please let me know so that we can get a group started!
I love this survey course, based on the workbook "New Church Foundations." We always have fascinating discussions and learn a lot about each other in the process of learning about the church. Even if you have been involved before, it's worth being involved again since there is so much to learn.
Vacation time
Elise and I are taking a little vacation, returning to the office on Thursday morning, October 3. Thank you to everyone for your love and support of our ministry and the health of our beloved Chapel.
With love and respect,

Genesis 47:5-10 (NKJV)
Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”
Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”
And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” So Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
John 12:23-33 NIV
Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
Secrets of Heaven §4676
In an inner sense, old age does not mean old age, because our inner self or spirit does not know what old age is. As our body or outer self ages, we pass on to a new stage of life. Our spirit improves with age while our body deteriorates, and it improves even more in the other world. The Lord is constantly leading the inhabitants of that world who are in heaven to a better life and eventually to the bloom of young adulthood — even those who died at a good old age. This shows that on an inner
plane, old age symbolizes life.

Announcement
of a Global Gathering of Church Members and Friends
|
|
When: June 18-21, 2020
Where: Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania
Who: All are welcome
It was a tradition in our global organization, The General Church of the New Jerusalem, to hold what used to be called an Assembly every 4 years or so. These days they are not as frequent. The last one was held in June 2011, the same summer Elise and I moved to Tucson.
This time it's being called a Retreat. Members and friends of the church from all over the world are invited to attend, renew friendships, make new friends, worship and learn together, talk about challenges, and get recharged to move forward in support of the upbuilding of the Lord's church around the globe. Elise and I plan to attend. We would love to
have other members and friends of Sunrise Chapel participate.
Please direct questions to gcretreat2020@newchurch.org
And look for more information to come as it becomes available.
