What is the Kingdom of Heaven Like?

Last Sunday's Service
Thank you to Frank Rose for leading the church service last week while Elise and I were on vacation. And thank you to Louise Rose for her loving care of the chancel decorations, including the beautiful flower arrangements. If you missed attending, you can view the archived lifestream on our You Tube channel.
Click on the big blue button below: "Livestream Sunrise Chapel". Let me know if you have any trouble accessing it. We are still learning and ironing out the wrinkles. There is really no perfect substitute for worshiping together in person with all the nuances of personal connection and interaction, but modern technology does provide a great window into the experience.
This Sunday, A Parable about the Kingdom of Heaven
What is the kingdom of heaven like? Note that since the kingdom of heaven is "within", it's not just about some future state after death. Jesus told many parables to help His listeners (including us) visualize what they needed to do right away to experience the kingdom of heaven in daily life. This parable can be understood as a cooking recipe.
"New Church 101" Small Group Starting on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 2 pm
A few people have expressed interest in a small group to discuss the basics of our church - the unique teachings, the history, and the current "state of the union." We are looking at meeting on Wednesdays starting October 9 at 2 pm. If you are interested, please let me know!
I love this survey course, based on the workbook "New Church Foundations." We always have fascinating discussions and learn a lot about each other in the process of learning about the church. Even if you have been involved before, it's worth being involved again since there is so much to learn.
Back from vacation
Elise and I had a wonderful break from the routine with a variety of fun (and some challenging) adventures! We are happy to be back home in beautiful Tucson and looking forward to see you this Sunday!
With love and respect,

The Lord knows each of us by name
Hearing one's name spoken in friendship is music to the ears. It is a sign of wanting to connect. It doesn't get old or worn out. It's a real gift.
In Isaiah 43, the Lord says, "I have called you by name." And in John 10, the Lord refers to Himself as a shepherd who knows every sheep by name. Since the Lord want us to love others like He loves us, I think this is strong encouragement for each of us to do our best to learn each others' names.
Looking for a name tag coordinator
From time to time in the past we have used name tags during the luncheon time to help us all get to know each other better. We have not had a name tag coordinator for some time. But in the spirit of helping everyone learn each others' names and encouraging friendship, I heartily invite someone or several people to take on this volunteer role. I think of it as a ministry that can be very rewarding. If you would
like to volunteer, please speak to me or Elise. We will support you with supplies and encouragement.

Leviticus 23:4-6,16-17
These are the feasts of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the Lord’s Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; seven days you must eat unleavened bread…. Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord. You
shall bring from your dwellings two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven. They are the firstfruits to the Lord.
Luke 13:20-21 (NKJV) (see also Matt 13:33)
Jesus spoke this parable, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.’”
Luke 17:21
“Indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
Divine Providence §25
Spiritual fermenting happens in many ways both in the heavens and on earth, but people in our world do not know what these processes are or how they happen. There are things that are both evil and false that are injected into communities the way agents of fermentation are injected into flour or grape juice. These serve to separate things that do not belong together and unite things that do, so that the substance becomes pure and clear. These are the processes referred to by the Lord's words,
‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.’
Secrets of Heaven §7906
The purification of truth from falsity cannot ever come about in a person without so called fermentation, that is, without the conflict of falsity with truth and of truth with falsity. But after the conflict has taken place and truth has triumphed, the falsity falls away like dregs and the truth emerges purified.

Announcement
of a Global Gathering of Church Members and Friends
|
|
When: June 18-21, 2020
Where: Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania
Who: All are welcome
It was a tradition in our global organization, The General Church of the New Jerusalem, to hold what used to be called an Assembly every 4 years or so. These days they are not as frequent. The last one was held in June 2011, the same summer Elise and I moved to Tucson.
This time it's being called a Retreat. Members and friends of the church from all over the world are invited to attend, renew friendships, make new friends, worship and learn together, talk about challenges, and get recharged to move forward in support of the upbuilding of the Lord's church around the globe. Elise and I plan to attend. We would love to
have other members and friends of Sunrise Chapel participate.
Please direct questions to gcretreat2020@newchurch.org
And look for more information to come as it becomes available.
