The Power of the Lord shows up in loving others

This Sunday we continue our series on the Biblical story of Gideon: "Growing Through Challenges"
Part three is about the inner power the Lord longs for us to experience
In this episode of Gideon's story, the Lord gives him strange instructions for how to prepare his army of warriors for the battle they will wage. This time, the focus is on trusting the Lord's power in spite of so many of the people feeling so fearful and powerless.
How does this challenge play out in our own lives? On the one hand, we are raised with a sense that strength and power are virtues. On the other hand, compared to the Lord's infinite power, we are terribly vulnerable and weak. Let's explore this paradox together.

This week and next these two rooms are getting repaired after an insurance claim because of water damage from a leaky pipe over a year ago. Thank you to Mike Villeburn for overseeing this project and getting it done!
Happy Valentines day!
For many, Valentines day has a romantic connotation. But from my background as an elementary school principal, I like to think of Valentines day as a time to celebrate what Swedenborg calls "mutual love." In the schools where I served, the teachers and parents encouraged their students to treat each other nicely and kindly and share the love. Although it's become another
commercialized opportunity to make a buck, it can also be used in a good way to share a kind of innocent love and appreciation for each other. And it even goes along with what the Lord teaches: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." John 13:34

"Growing Through Challenges" - a New Church Journey Program
We're half-way through this series, exploring the life experience of facing challenges. Thank you to the leaders of the groups!
The focus of this series
Life is rarely without its hardships. Sometimes challenges can feel like weights bearing down, making it difficult to move. So, how can we better prepare ourselves for these overwhelming times?
This 4-week series explores the Biblical story of Gideon, a young man who was called on by the Lord to overcome many challenges. Through his example of patience, hard work, and faith, we too can access the tools to come out stronger on the other side.
Week 1 (February 2) - The Presence of the Lord

From the Bible
Judges 7:1-2
Early in the morning, Gideon and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’"
Isaiah 40:6-8
All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.
Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Matthew 5:3-5
Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
John 15:5-8
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my
disciples.”
From the teachings of the New Church through Emanuel Swedenborg
Power and Powerlessness
Divine Providence §19
Hell is... an absolute nothing when it comes to power. I have seen this quite convincingly time after time.
The remarkable thing is, though, that all the evil people [there] believe they are powerful and all the good people [in heaven] believe they themselves are not. This is because evil people ascribe everything to their own power, their own deviousness and malice, and nothing to the Lord, while good people ascribe nothing to their own prudence and everything to the Lord, who is omnipotent.

efforts.
