Vacation (10/21/21)

I was recently reflecting on the need for recreation in order to have a healthy life. Our family will be on vacation (10/22 - 10/31), which has given us all pause for thought on how useful it is to get a "break." Here's one passage which speaks to this directly:

It is love for ourselves and love for the world that prompt us to care about our bodies, to want nourishment, clothing, and housing, to take care of our homes, to look for jobs in order to be useful, to be granted respect due to the worth of our responsibilities so that people heed us, and even to find delight and recreation in worldly pleasures.

All of these activities, however, should be for the sake of usefulness. They bring us into a state of serving the Lord and the neighbor. In contrast, when there is no love for serving the Lord and the neighbor, when there is nothing but love for using the world to suit ourselves, then the love becomes hellish instead of heavenly. (Swedenborg, Divine Love and Wisdom 396)

It is important to get a break in order "charge our batteries", not as an end in itself (or for ourselves alone) but so we may love the Lord by serving our neighbor. May you find such rest and recharge as the holiday season approaches, and as you prepare for a useful close to the year!

Frank Rose Memorial Weekend:

CELEBRATION OF FRANK ROSE - Friday, October 22, 2021 -

starting at 6:30pm in the Memorial Garden.

Please join us to celebrate our beloved Frank Rose with a number of activities:

- First, we will meet in the Memorial Garden at 6:30 pm for a Service of Dedication where Frank's ashes will be interred and plaque for Frank will be placed. We will all have an opportunity to say some words or a prayer as we walk up to his niche. Nathan and Elise Gladish will be attending.

- Then we will go to Friendship Hall and enjoy Frank's favorite dessert...ice cream bars!!! We will have time to spend telling stories about the humorous side of Frank - so lots of laughter is on the agenda! And then to round out the evening the Band of Roses will be entertaining us

with their music!

A Special Worship Service:

As another surprise, on Sunday, October 24, 2021, we will have the pleasure of listening to one of Frank's sermons that will be played in the Chapel during the service.

Here's a description of the topic from Jonathan Rose: "Picked by Frank Rose's family around the one-year anniversary of his passing, this sermon of Frank's from 2001 is on the subject of beauty (exploring its purpose and spiritual underpinnings)."

A Restart for the Memorial Service Ministry:

We wanted to let folks know that we have begun once again offering memorial services to our community! The first happened at the beginning of this month and our next is scheduled for November 6th. If you are interested in supporting this effort, please email Kris Bernardy: sssherona@aol.com.

...And further on Remembrance:

We are planning to hold a service on November 7th which includes opportunities to remember loved ones who have transitioned to the other world. This will be the special theme to the worship service itself that day, and we are also hoping people will bring pictures of their loved ones to help decorate the chancel. Join us!
